ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. - KU
ran into trouble against the No. 20 team in the country, BYU-Hawaii,
falling 5-0 in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II Men's Tennis
Championships.
After falling behind 3-0
after the doubles competition, Kutztown dropped matches at the
fourth and fifth singles positions as the Seasiders advanced to the
quarterfinals.
On the doubles courts, Jakub
Huza and Jeff Rice notched BYU-Hawaii's first team point as they
defeated Ilja Semjonovs and Lukas Beman by the score
of 8-1 at the third spot. Finishing at the No. 2 position with an
8-2, Dorian Porada and Leon So'onalole took down Kutztown's
Somdeep Appineni and Radoslaw Hlubinski for the 2-0 lead.
At first doubles, Mukundan
Nandakumar and Harsh Sharma suffered their first doubles
loss of the season, as the BYU-Hawaii tandem broke the duo's
16-match win streak with an 8-6 decision. The Seasider team of
Dillon Porter and Junyoung Kim entered the competition ranked ninth
in the nation.
Needing just two points to
take the match, the Seasiders pushed one step closer with a win at
No. 5 singles as Jakub Huza defeated Somdeep Appineni 6-3,
6-2. Leon So'onalole tallied BYU-Hawaii's deciding point as he
defeated Ilja Semjonovs at the fourth spot by the score of
6-3, 6-1.
The loss brings a close to
the KU season. The Golden Bears finished 20-2 on the season,
setting a school record for wins and tying the mark for fewest
losses (1997). Nandakumar finished his career tied with
Michael Rohrbach (1997-2000) atop the KU all-time list with 141
combined singles and doubles victories. His 78 doubles
wins are a Golden Bear record and his 63 singles victories rank
fourth.
