Second Round Match
Kutztown University 5, Queens College 4

KUTZTOWN, PA – Kutztown University battled back and won five of six in singles matches after Queens College blanked KU in doubles, to win 5-4 in the second round match of the NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis East Regional.  Kutztown advanced to the NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis National Tournament held in Kansas City, MO.  

            Queens’  Jimmy Delevante (jr. Commack, NY/Commack) and Alfredo Perez (sr. Caracas, VENEZUELA/Santiago) picked up the win for the first point at third doubles, 8-5. Ricardo Yepes (sr. Bogota/COLOMBIA) and Andrey Vasiliev (sr. Novosibirsk/RUSSIA) won at second doubles, 9-7, while William Almeyda (so. PUERTO RICO/Cass) and Wojciech Stuchlik (jr. Pszczyna/POLAND) closed out with a 8-6 win in third doubles.

            Rubens Vianna (Belo Horizonte/BRAZIL) was the first win for the Golden Bears, at sixth singles, 6-3, 6-3. Harsh Sharma (Calcutta, INDIA) followed at second singles with a commanding win, 6-4, 6-1, after giving up the Bears only loss in the first round on Thursday. Queens scored next at first singles with Stuchlik knocking off Santiago Baquerizo (fr. Guayalquil/ECUADOR) in first singles, 6-4, 6-4.  

            The Golden Bears would take the remaining three matches at third, fourth and fifth singles to secure their spot in the third round of national play. Radoslaw Hlubinski (sr. Warsaw/POLAND) took his match at third singles, 7-6, 7-5 and Somdeep Appineni (jr. Hyderabad/INDIA) won at fifth singles, 7-5, 6-1.

Lukas Labitsch (Bruck an der Mur/AUSTRIA) iced the match for the Golden Bears at fourth singles. After winning a close first set, Labitsch and his opponent Almeyda fought to another tight set. With Labitsch leading 6-5 and nearing game point, Almeyda went down reaching for a volley close to the line, and injured his knee. Almeyda offered a gutsy performance, finishing off his set, but Labitsch was able to close it out, 7-6, 7-5.

Kutztown will advance to the NCAA Division II Men’s Tennis Round of 16 at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, MO. There they will play the winner of today’s St. Edward’s University versus Central Oklahoma match-up at the NCAA Division II Central Regional.


Day 1

First Match:
Queens 5, Bentley 0

KUTZTOWN, PA – Queens College advanced past Bentley in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Tennis East Regional held at Kutztown University.  The Knights won in five straight matches to ice the victory and move on to the winner of this afternoon’s match, Kutztown University versus Dowling College.

            Queens’ William Almeyda (so. Puerto Rico/Cass) and Wojclech Stuchlik (jr. Pszczyna, Poland) won in first doubles, 8-3.  Ricardo Yepes (sr. Bogota, Colobia) and Andrey Vasiliev (sr. Novosibirsk, Russia) picked up the win for the Knights at second doubles, 8-1, while Jimmy Delevante (jr. Commack, NY/Commack) and Alfredo Perez (sr. Caracas, Venezuela/Santiago) won third doubles, 8-4, to put Queens up 3-0.

            Stuchlik, playing at first singles, locked in the fourth point of the match and the first singles point, winning 6-0, 6-1. Almeyda iced the match for his team just a few points later, scoring the fifth point in fourth singles and ending the match, 6-3, 6-2.

Queens College will play the winner of this afternoon’s Kutztown versus Dowling match in the tomorrow’s second round match-up. The winner of that match will advance to the finals in Kansas City, MO.


Second Match

KUTZTOWN, PA – Kutztown utilized two forfeits to defeat Dowling College in NCAA Men’s Tennis East Regional first round action this afternoon at KU Courts.

            Golden Bears Harsh Sharma (jr. Calcutta/INDIA) and Lukas Labitsch (fr. Bruck an der Mur/AUSTRIA) picked up the win for the first point at first doubles, 8-4. Santiago Baquerizo (fr. Guayalquil/ECUADOR) and Radoslaw Hlubinski (sr. Warsaw/POLAND) won at second doubles, 8-4, while Somdeep Appenini (jr. Hyderabad/INDIA) and Rubens Vianna (so. Belo Horizonte/BRAZIL) collected the forfeit at third doubles for KU.  

            Coming into the singles competition holding a 4-0 advantage, the Golden Bears needed just one match win to seal the victory. Dowling College’s Willem Jensen Van Rensberg (jr. Pretoria/SOUTH AFRICA) battled back for the Golden Lions winning two straight sets in second singles to pick up the lone point for DC over Sharma, 6-1, 6-1. Hlubinski would end the match for the Golden bears in third singles, picking up the fifth point, 6-2, 6-1, and advancing KU to the second round of the NCAA East Regional.
