KU TENNIS PREPS
FOR PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS AT BLOOMSBURG COURTS
BLOOMSBURG, Pa.
— The Kutztown University men’s and women’s tennis teams qualified
for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships at
Bloomsburg Courts as No. 2 seeds.
The tournament
semifinals are scheduled for Friday and the Championships are set
for Saturday. The women’s final and consolation matches is slated
for 9 a.m., while the men’s final and consolation matches will start
at 11 a.m.
The KU men’s team
(3-7, 3-1 PSAC) is the No. 2 overall seed, behind No. 1-seeded
Bloomsburg (13-4, 4-0 PSAC). Millersville (3-8, 2-2 PSAC) and East
Stroudsburg (4-9, 1-3 PSAC) round out the four teams competing at
the championships.
The Golden Bears
will take on Millersville at 3 p.m. Friday. KU won 9-0 in their
previous meeting on April 5 at Keystone Courts.
The KU men will be
in search of their fifth straight PSAC title and their eighth in
their last nine tries.
The KU women’s team
(7-6, 4-1 PSAC East) is No. 2 out of the Eastern Division, behind
Bloomsburg (9-5, 5-0 PSAC East). California (Pa.) won the Western
Division with a record of 4-0. The Vulcans (21-2) are ranked No. 5
in the nation. No. 23 Slippery Rock (18-2, 3-1 PSAC West) is the
second seed in the West.
The Golden Bears
will match up against California (Pa.) in the first round at 1 p.m.
Friday.
PSAC Women's Semifinals
California (Pa.) 7, Kutztown 0
BLOOMSBURG, Pa.
— The Kutztown University women’s tennis team was swept in its
doubles and singles matches and fell 7-0 to No. 5 California (Pa.)
Friday in the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference Tournament.
Inga Chilingaryan
and Helena Van Eysendeyk led California (22-2) with a win in the No.
1 doubles match over Rohini Das (so. Kolkata, INDIA) and
Barbara Joerns (so. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY). Both players also
won their respective singles matches, as Chilingaryan defeated
Joerns 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles and Helena Van Eysendeyk won
6-1, 6-2 over Das in the No. 2 singles.
The Golden Bears
(7-7) will meet Bloomsburg in the consolation match at 9 a.m.
Saturday. Bloomsburg lost 5-1 to Slippery Rock in the semifinals
Friday, and The Rock will take on the Vulcans for the PSAC title.

Kutztown 5, Millersville 2
BLOOMSBURG- The Kutztown
University men's tennis team defeated Millersville University 5-2
Friday afternoon in the semi-finals of the PSAC Tournament.
Reigning PSAC tennis player of the week
Arpit Sharma (Kolkata,INDIA) accounted for two of the five
wins for KU, as he teamed with Lukas Labitsch (Bruck an der Mur,
AUSTRIA) to secure a win in first doubles over Chris Matisse and
Drew Slocum of Millersville, 8-6. In second singles, Sharma defeated
Slocum 6-3, 6-2.
KU won five of the six singles matches,
as Andy Torrealba (Prembrek Pines, FL/Chales Franasan),
Bobby Zerwick (Bowers/Kutztown), Nick Gallagher, and
Sendhur Gautham (Chennai, INDIA) all picked up victories.
KU's victory now sets up the title match
against the host, Bloomsburg University, starting Saturday at 9 a.m.
from Bloomsburg Courts. KU last faced off against the Huskies on
April 8, dropping the match 1-8.
PSAC Women's Consolation
Bloomsburg 5, KU 2
BLOOMSBURG, Pa.
— The Kutztown University women’s tennis team fell 5-2 to Bloomsburg
in the consolation match of the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference Championships Saturday.
Rohini Das (so.
Kolkata, INDIA) and Barbara Joerns (so. Ludwigshafen,
GERMANY) teamed up to win the No. 1 doubles match 8-4 over Torie
Cunningham and Alison Carney, but Bloomsburg (12-6) won the No. 2
and 3 doubles matches.
Das collected the
only win in the singles competition for KU (7-8), defeating
Cunningham 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot.
California (Pa.)
defeated Slippery Rock 5-0 for the PSAC title.

— Bloomsburg won three singles matches and two doubles matches to
end the Kutztown University men’s tennis team’s run of conference
titles with a 5-1 win Saturday at the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference Championships.

Lukas Labitsch (jr.
Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) and Arpit Sharma (so. Kolkata,
INDIA) picked up KU’s only win with an 8-5 defeat of Dan Gal and
Mitch Zenaty in the No. 1 doubles match.
Gal bounced back to
defeat Labitsch in the No. 1 singles match, 6-2, 6-1.
Andrew Torrealba
(so. Pembrek Pines, Fla./Chales Franasan) and Sendhur Gautham (sr.
Chennai, INDIA)
fell 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles to Ryan Chow and Daniel Phillips.
Robert Zerwick (fr.
Bowers/Kutztown) and Nick Gallagher (jr. King of
Prussia/Upper Merion) lost in the No. 3 doubles,
dropping an 8-2 decision.
KU (4-8) had won
the last four PSAC titles and seven of the last eight before
Bloomsburg (14-5) picked up its 21st title.
