SMITHFIELD, RI - Kutztown
University's women's tennis defeated Bryant, 5-2, and advances to
the NCAA Championships in Kansas City, MO.
Kerstin Kloeffer and Pyria
Pachkawde started at first singles, defeating Bryant, 8-3.
Magaly Peter (fr.
Mundolsheim, FRANCE) and Jharna Nansi (jr. Mumbai, INDIA)
won at second singles, 8-1.
Bryant's Michelle Burke
(so. Barrington,RI/Barrington) and Lauren Mullen
(so. Braintree,
Mass./Braintree) won at third singles, 8-3.
Kloeffer won at first singles,
6-1, 6-3 and Peter won second singles 6-0, 6-1.
Nansi won at fourth singles for the fifth points, 6-3, 6-0.
Bryant's Burke won the sixth singles. Third and fifth
singles did not finish.
Peter and Nansi set or
tied three records in the victory. Peter recorded her
19th singles win this season, tying the mark for single-season wins
held by Margo Ayers (1996-97) and Meg Edwards (1996-97). The
doubles team of Peter and Nansi became the winningest
single-season doubles tandem at KU with its 15th win, passing
Meredith Keller/Amy Sonon (1997-98) and Ayers/Edwards (1996-97).
Nansi has 20 doubles wins this season, already a
single-season record.

Kutztown University 5, University of California (PA) 4
SMITHFIELD, RI – Kutztown University’s women’s tennis team avenged
an earlier loss to the University of California (Pa) in the PSAC
Championships by taking the first round match in the NCAA Division
II Women’s Tennis East Regional from the Vulcans.
Inga Chilingaryan (so. Yerevan/ARMENIA) and
Melissa Anderson (San Diego, CA/El Capitan) picked up the
win for the Vulcans at first doubles, 8-4.
Lauren Hovey (fr. Silver Lake, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls)
and Lindsay Mathieson (fr. New Market, Ontario/Huron
Heights) won at third doubles, 8-2. Magaly Peter (fr.
Mundolsheim, FRANCE) and Jharna Nansi (jr. Mumbai, INDIA)
kept the match close heading into the singles matches by winning the
second doubles, 8-2.
Chilingaryan and Mathieson were the scorers for Cal in
first and sixth singles, respectively. Chilingaryn took out
Kerstin Kloeffer (sr. Ludwigshafen/GERMANY) for the second
time in three weeks, 6-2, 6-2, while Mathieson dropped only one game
in her route of KU’s Kristen Bodalski (sr. Media/Cardinal O’Hara)
6-1, 6-0.
Peter, Pachawde, and Lauren Lasoncy (sr.
Shillington/Governor Mifflin) scored the next three points for
the Golden Bears, setting the stage for Nansi to seal the
deal in her third set against Cal’s Jessica Brown (jr.
Pittsburgh/Keystone Oaks) 6-1, 6-7, 6-3. Nansi’s win
ensured KU a spot in tomorrow’s second round match up where the
Golden Bears will face either Bryant or Philadelphia University.

Kutztown advanced
to the second round of the East Regional, where they will face the
winner of Bryant versus Philadelphia University, played at 3:00 PM.
That second round match up will start at noon on Saturday at Bryant
College.
