Kutztown Places Third in Men & Women’s Track & Field at PSACs
CALIFORNIA, PA –
Kutztown University’s men’s and women’s track & field teams each
placed third at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
Championships at California University of Pennsylvania.
The
women’s title was won by Slippery Rock, which had 207 points, 100
ahead of second-place Lock Haven. KU was third with 101, followed
by Shippensburg (87) and Indiana (PA) 78.
The
men’s crown was taken by Shippensburg with 168 points. Slippery
Rock was second with 140.5, followed by KU with 115.5. Lock Haven
was fourth (88) and Indiana (PA) fifth (72).
The
Golden Bear women claimed one individual title on Saturday, as
Alison Maurer won the hammer throw with a distance of 176-2.
Maurer was named the PSAC Women's Field Most Valuable
Player. Christine Procopio was second in the event (167-3).
Also
placing second were Doofan Tor-Agbidye In the 400-meter dash
(56.74), Laura Kline in the 400 hurdles (1:02.23) and the
4x400 relay of Jewel Daye, Tor-Agbidye, Renee
Marchand and Kline (3:53.52).
KU’s
men won three titles. Tony Hegedus won the 400 hurdles with
a time of 52.40. Steve Winters won the pole vault with a
height of 15-7. He was one of four Golden Bears to place in the
event as Brian Dodds (15-1) was second, Mike Provenzano
(15-1) was fourth and Mike Zebert (14-7) was fifth. KU’s
4x400 relay team of Steve Hixson, Kendel Dixon,
Matt Carroll and Hegedus won the gold with a time of
3:14.60.
Also
placing second for KU’s men were Carroll in the 400 (48.24)
and Steve Tyson in the shot put (48-11).

Wins Heptathlon, KU Women 4th, Men 6th after Day 2

CALIFORNIA, PA - Kutztown University's Renee Marchand
repeated as champion in the heptathlon, while the Golden bear women
are fourth and the men are sixth after the second day of the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship at California
University of Pennsylvania.
Marchand finished
with 4,485 points, 171 points ahead of Leslie Martin of East
Stroudsburg. In the men's decathlon, KU's Ian Clark placed
third to earn All-PSAC honors, with 5,881 points, 658 points off the
pace of champion Paul Schwab of Slippery Rock.
Also on Friday, KU had
placewinners in four women's and four men's finals.
For the women,
Stephanie Williams earned All-PSAC honors in the 10,000, placing
third. Laura Deller (4th) and Alexandra Butler
(8th) placed in the long jump, while Lindsay Runkle was
seventh in the pole vault and Michelle Hughes was eighth in the shot
put.
Kutztown is fourth after
six events with 25 points. Slippery Rock has a sizable early
lead, with 69 points. Lock Haven (40) and Shippensburg (26)
are second and third.
For Kutztown's men,
Mike Turner earned All-PSAC honors in the long jump, placing
third. Pat Bone was sixth in the 10,000, Steve Tyson
(7th) and Benn Trasatt (8th) placed in the discus, and
Tyson was sixth in the hammer.
KU stands in fourth
after six events with 21 points. Shippensburg leads with 54,
followed by Slippery Rock (40), Lock Haven (29), East Stroudsburg
(25) and IUP (24).
The PSAC Championships
conclude with the remainder field events and the finals of the track
events on Saturday.

Marchand Leads Heptathlon
after Day 1
CALIFORNIA, PA - Kutztown junior Renee Marchand (Hawley, Pa.) and
Slippery Rock junior Paul Schwab (Windsor Locks, Conn.) hold the
lead in their respective multi-event competitions after the first
day at the 2006 PSAC Track & Field Championships at California
University.
Marchand, the defending PSAC heptathlon champion, compiled 2,661
points through four events for a 61-point lead over East Stroudsburg
Soph. Leslie Martin (Hudson Falls, N.Y.).
In the men's decathlon, Ian Clark is in third place after five
events. Clark has 3,215 points. The leader, Paul Schwab
of Slippery Rock, has 3,486 points.
Action in the multi-events complete on Friday.
