Game 1: Kutztown 7, Ohio Valley 0
COMPLETE STATS

INSTITUTE, WV – Philip Rummel pitched eight shutout innings and Kutztown turned six double plays as the Golden Bears defeated Ohio Valley, 7-0, in the opening game of the NCAA Division II North Atlantic Regional at West Virginia State Thursday morning.

Josh Fink was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while Gary Stricker was 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and a home run.  Kyle Costello and Nate Kranz each drove in a pair of runs for the Golden Bears.

Rummel (5-3) was superb on the mound for KU.  He struck out just one and allowed seven hits, but forced 12 ground outs in the hitter-friendly confines of Calvin Bailey Field.

“I never really strike a lot of guys out,” Rummel said.  “I usually just try to let guys put it in play and let my defense make plays.  The guys did a great job behind me turning all those double plays.”

Rummel was the beneficiary of a season-high six double plays turned by his defense.  Derick Reis hurled a scoreless ninth inning to close the door on the Fighting Scots.

“Rummel went out and did an outstanding job,” KU head coach Chris Blum said.  “He has been as good as any of our pitchers over the last month and a half, which is saying something.  His fastball has a lot of movement on it, and it gets batters to hit ground balls.  The defense did a great job at turning double plays and stopping any momentum Ohio Valley had.”

OVU had 11 base runners in the game, but six were doubled off, including one twin killing off a diving catch by left fielder Garrison Rausch, who threw to Mike McCardell at first to double off the runner in the seventh.  Another baserunner was caught stealing by KU catcher Matt Dierolf

“Dierolf throwing that guy out really set the tempo for the game,”  Rummel said.  “After that, I was able to keep guys close and they never tried to run after that.”

With the win, Kutztown (41-12) , the #2 seed in the tournament, advances to Friday’s game 6, where it will face the winner of Thursday’s game between third seeded West Chester and fourth-seeded Shepherd.   That game starts at 4:00 PM.   Ohio Valley (36-26), the #5 seed, will face the loser of the game between #1 seed West Virginia State/#6 seed Pitt-Johnstown on Friday.

Kutztown got on the board in the bottom of the first.  Fink doubled to lead off the inning, then came around on Costello’s single.  The duo combined on another run in the third, when Fink singled and eventually scored on Costello’s groundout.

KU broke it open in the sixth.  Kranz hit a two-run single followed by RBI hits by Stricker and Craig Stricker’s solo homer in the eighth capped the scoring.

D.J. Schreckengost was 2-for-3 for the Scots.  Adam Copeland pitched a complete-game for OVU, striking out two.
