KU in semifinals after tournament format
changed to single elimination
LANCASTER, Pa. — Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference officials have decided to adjust the
remainder of the tournament schedule due to all the postponements
this week.
After it was determined that a
possible second site for games (Millersville University) was not an
option, the PSAC has changed the format of the tournament to single
elimination.
The teams with one loss (Lock Haven,
Mansfield, Shippensburg and Slippery Rock) have been automatically
eliminated from contention.
The four winners (California, Kutztown, Mercyhurst
and West Chester) will play at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Game 5 is between California and West
Chester and Game 6 is between Kutztown and Mercyhurst. The
two winners will play in a championship game that will follow 25
minutes after Game
6.
The weather is
supposed to clear up in the afternoon in Lancaster and there should be a big
enough gap to get three games in Thursday.
KU's game
against Mercyhurst at Clipper Magazine Stadium will be available via
audio Webcast on the Golden Bear Network. If KU advances to the
championship game Thursday, it too
will be available on the
Golden Bear Network.
The PSAC's decision to change the
format was made after a four-game schedule was washed out on Monday
and only two of five games were played on both Tuesday and
Wednesday. In all, 12 games were scheduled to have been completed by
Wednesday night. Only four have been.
The Golden Bears finally played their
first game Wednesday, defeating Slippery Rock 8-5, nearly 43 hours
after the original start time of 3:30 p.m. Monday. Darin
Gorski struck out a season-high 15 batters in the win.
