Adams leads offense to 53-36 win in
Maroon & Gold Game
KUTZTOWN, PA – Maurice Adams (jr. West Chester/Henderson)
rushed for 136 yards on 17 carries as the Kutztown University
offense defeated the defense, 53-36, in the Maroon & Gold
intra-squad scrimmage at University Field Saturday afternoon.
The
teams used a modified scoring system, which awarded points to the
offense for touchdowns, field goals, extra points and first downs;
while awarding points to the defense for touchdowns, turnovers and
stops.
The
Golden Bear offense scored four touchdowns, including short runs by
backup quarterback Shane Martin (so. New Holland/Garden Spot),
fullbacks Joe Strauss (r-fr. Lititz/Warwick) and Travis
Barren (jr. Coatesville/Bishop Shanahan), and a six-yard
completion from starting QB Kyle Spotts (jr. Berwick/Berwick)
to Brett Harbach (sr. West Lawn/Wilson).
The
offense added points on a 26-yard field goal and four extra points
by Steve Sandberg (so. Philadelphia/Northeast), as well as 22
first downs.
The
defense notched a pair of turnovers, including a fumble recovery by
safety Brian Bingnear (jr. Boothwyn/Chichester) and an
interception by defensive back Joe Iannello (fr. Media/Strath
Haven). The defenders also notched eight stops of the offense.
Running back Tyler Dinnis (so. Doylestown/Central Bucks West)
added 76 yards on eight rushes, while Stu Berringer (r-fr.
Reading/Central Catholic) had 33 yards on nine carries and
Strauss notched 31 yards on six rushes.
KU’s
passing game was limited by the wind, rain and cold weather at
University Field. Spotts completed just 5-of-18 passes for
74 yards. Martin was 1-for-2 for 11 yards, and Matthew
Lawhorne (r-fr. Macungie/Brandywine Heights) completed 1-of-2
for three yards. Newcomer Maurice Humphrey (so. New Britain,
CT/Berlin), a transfer from Penn State, caught two passes for 41
yards, including a 35 yarder. Harbach had two catches for 14
yards.
Defensive lineman Craig Croman (Tremont/Pine Grove) led the
defense with seven tackles. Eight other players had five stops
each. End Leroy Azubuike (jr. East Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg
South) had five tackles, including one for loss and a pass
breakup. End Mike Grosso (sr. Hackettstown, NJ/Pope John)
had five hits with two breakups. Derek Kay (r-fr. York/York
Catholic) had five tackles and a sack. Lineman Kevin Branco
(so. Hellertown/Saucon Valley) had two sacks.
Harbach and cornerback Cory Porrino (sr. Orwigsburg/Blue
Mountain) were honored by the team as the offensive and
defensive most improved players, respectively.
Kutztown, under the direction of first-year head coach Raymond
Monica, will open its 2006 season on September 9 when it hosts
