KUTZTOWN, PA – The
Kutztown University Defense defeated the offense, 66-42, in the
Maroon & Gold intra-squad scrimmage at University Field Saturday
afternoon.
The
teams used a modified scoring system, which awarded points to the
offense for touchdowns, field goals, extra points and first downs;
while awarding points to the defense for touchdowns, turnovers and
stops.
The
defense recorded 18 stops and two turnovers, including interceptions
by defensive backs Cameron Parchment (so. Tannersville/Pocono
Mountain East) and Mike Ellerbe (so. Philadelphia/Overbrook).
The
defenders were led by defensive back Mike Gardier (so.
Dunmore/Dunmore) and linebacker Joel Irwin (fr.
Coatesville/Bishop Shanahan), who had eight tackles apiece.
Irwin added a sack and two tackles for loss. Gardier, a transfer
from Mansfield, had a pass breakup and a TFL. Linebacker Keith
Massey (fr. Allentown/Allen) had seven tackles. Defensive
tackle Craig Moose (so. Dillsburg/Northern York) had four tackles,
including a pair of sacks.
All-America safety Brian Bingnear (sr. Boothwyn/Chichester)
had five tackles, as did defensive end Leroy Azubuike (sr. East
Stroudsburg/East Stroudsburg South). Linemen Joseph Hahn (fr.
Frackville/Cardinal Brennan) and Craig Croman (so. Pine
Grove/Pine Grove) added five tackles apiece. Croman had
two for loss.
Kutztown’s offense was led punter-turned-wide receiver Ryan Nye
(jr. Bernville/Holy Name). Nye caught four passes for
125 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Kyle Spotts (sr.
Tamaqua/Tamaqua) completed 5-of-18 passes for 118 yards.
Spotts and Nye connected on a 72-yard touchdown. Backup
QB Shane Martin (jr. New Holland/Garden Spot) was 8-of-15 for
111 yards and a TD. He tossed a 20-yard scoring strike to
Maurice Humphrey (jr. New Britain, CT/Berlin). Humphrey
finished with four catches for 57 yards.
Joe
Strauss (so. Lititz/Warwick) led the running game with 66 yards
on 21 carries. Travis Barron (sr. Coatesville/Bishop Shanahan)
rushed for 64 yards on 17 rushes.
Kutztown’s offense scored three touchdowns, totaled 18 first downs
and got a field goal from Steve Sandberg (sr.
Quakertown/Northeast Philadelphia).
At halftime, Kutztown presented its most improved awards for the
spring. Winners were offensive lineman Tyler Romberger (so.
Muir/Williams Valley) and defensive lineman Nick Cresta (jr.
Wallingford/Strath Haven).
Kutztown, under the direction of second-year head coach Raymond
Monica, will open its 2007 season on Sept. 1 when it travels to
Southern Connecticut State. The home opener is set for Sept. 15 vs.
Shippensburg.
