Golden Bear Grapplers Knocked out
at NCAAs
FINDLAY, OH -
Kutztown's five wrestlers at the NCAA Divsion II Championship have
been eliminated from competition after the first day at Findlay
University.
The Golden Bears placed 27th out of 32 teams in the final team
standings with three points. Nebraska-Omaha won the team title
with 117 points. Nebraska-Kearney placed second with 98.5
points while Shippensburg was third with 66.5. The remaining
standings were: 4. Central, OK 64.5, 5. Minnesota State Mankato
63.5, 6. Pitt-Johnstown 63.0, 7. Augustana 60.0, 8. Findlay 55.5, 9.
Adams State 52.0, 10. Indianapolis 51.5, 11. Fort Hayes State 46.5,
12. Minnesota State Moorhead 36.5, 13. Wisconsin-Parkside 35.5, 14.
Mercyhurst 28.0, 15. Central Missouri State 27.5, 16. Truman State
25.5, 17. Upper Iowa 24.0, 18. Western State 17.5, 19. Ashland 13.0,
20. Carson Newman 11.0, 21. West Liberty 9.0, 22. New Mexico

Chris Chambers (fr. Holland/Council Rock South),
Bret Wade (sr. Phoenixville/Phoenixville) and Brandon Clemmer
(so. Pottstown/Upper Perkiomen) were all 1-2 in their weight
classes. Kevin Kalbach (jr. Downingtown/Downingtown)
and Andy Freas (jr. Trexlertown/Emmaus) were 0-2.
Chambers, in his first national championship, won his first bout
at 149 against Nebraska-Kearney’s Matt True in a 6-5 decision.
He then lost in the quarterfinals to Antonio Guerra from Findlay,
15-8. Chambers lost in the consolations to Chris Pingleton
(Indianapolis) 9-4.
Wade (184), in his second national championship, started his day
with a loss to Truman State’s Greg Nurrenbern, 7-2. Wade came back
and won his second bout 11-5 over Nebraska-Omaha’s Nate Ovaitt,
before losing to Nathan Jones of Carson Newman, 14-5.
In
his second national appearance, Clemmer was 1-2 at 133. In the first match, Clemmer lost to Indianapolis’s Shane Perkey 5-1. In the second
session, Clemmer major decisioned Troy Macfarland of MN St.
Moorhead, before losing to Dan Hilario (Neb.-Omaha) 3-2.
In
Kalbach’s first national
championships appearance, he ended up going 0-2 at 157. In
Kalbach’s first bout, he lost to Central, OK’s Jason Leavitt, 6-3.
Kalbach put a fight in his second bout, but lost 3-2 to Jared
Webster of Chaldron St.
In
his first national appearance, Freas
went 0-2. In the morning session, Tervel Dlagney of
Nebraska-Kearney defeated Freas by a major decision, 17-4. In the
evening session, Freas was pinned by Jose Navarro from Indianapolis
in 1:56.
