CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW

KU HEADS TO CLARION TO COMPETE IN PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

CLARION, Pa. — The Kutztown University wrestling team will look to improve on its six sixth-place finishes last season at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships this Saturday at Clarion University.

The 65th annual championship will include 80 athletes from eight PSAC schools and will start at 10 a.m. at W.S. Tippin Gymnasium.

KU, which is 3-0 in the early going, finished seventh overall out of eight teams last season at the PSAC Championships. The competitive event consists of six Division I schools — Bloomsburg, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Lock Haven and Millersville — and Division II Shippensburg and KU.

Edinboro finished first last season, with Bloomsburg, Lock Haven, Clarion and East Stroudsburg rounding out the top five.

KU’s Kyle Davis (so. Peckville/Valley View), who finished sixth at 197 pounds, is the only returning wrestler to have won match last season. Davis pinned P.J. DiStefano in 6:27 in the first round, before dropping a second-round bout to Edinboro’s Jim Gibson. He is 4-3 while wrestling at 184 pounds this season.

Davis’ bracket features a tough battle to the top with five place-winners returning, including the 2006 third-place finisher Jesse Hasseman (Bloomsburg) and the 2007 third-place finisher Dave Williams (East Stroudsburg).

Chris Chambers (jr. Holland/Council Rock South) finished sixth for the Golden Bears last season and will look to improve on his finish this season.

Chambers, who has qualified for the NCAA Championships twice, went 23-14 last season at 149. He’s 5-2 thus far in 2007 at the 157 pounds with two pins and 0-1 at 149. Chambers will wrestle at 149 this weekend, a bracket that features five returning place-winners, including the 2007 second-place finisher Daryl Cocozzo (Edinboro).

Below is a breakdown of the rest of the weight classes for KU:

125: Eddie Harris (fr. Wilmington, Del./Howard) will wrestle in the bracket featuring the two-time defending champion Mike Sees, from Bloomsburg.

133: Rob Vollrath (fr. Richboro/Council Rock South) also will be looking up to a defending champion, as Edinboro’s Ricky Deubel returns to wrestle at 133. There’s only one other place-winner returning in this bracket.

141: Jamie Soupik (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown) will get his first taste of the PSAC Championships Saturday in a bracket that features four returning place-winners, with the highest being Clarion’s Sal Lascari (third at 133 in 2007).

157: Dave Zeek (so. Newtown/Council Rock North), who has the most wins for KU at 7-4, will be in the same bracket as the 2006 149-pound NCAA Champion, Edinboro’s Gregor Gillespie.

165: Sonny Flood (jr. Southampton/William Tennent) faces a tough road with Edinboro’s Jarrod King, a transfer from Oklahoma, 2007 second-place finisher Ricky Schmelyun (Bloomsburg) and 2007 third-place finisher Landis Wright (Lock Haven) in the bracket.

174: Curtis Beardsell (jr. Warminster/William Tennent) will have to battle against three of the top four finishers from last season, including the defending champion from Edinboro, Phil Moricone.

197: Scott Snyder (so. Slatington/Northern Lehigh) will go against three place-winners and the No. 16-ranked wrestler at 197, Edinboro’s Pat Bradshaw.

285: Kevin Bolinsky (fr. Ashland/North Schuylkill) will be looking up at a two-time champion, No. 13-ranked Mike Spaid, of Bloomsburg. Edinboro’s No. 6-ranked Joe Fendone, however, is favored to win the bracket.
