KUTZTOWN, PA – The Kutztown University Athletics Department has named its Athletes, Rookies and Coaches of the Year for the 2004-05 school year.

Kerstin Kloeffer (so. Ludwigs Hafen, GERMANY), a member of the KU women’s tennis team, was selected as the Female Athlete of the Year, while baseball’s Matt Keller (jr. Fleetwood/Fleetwood) was chosen as the Male Athlete of the Year.  Kim Kelty (fr. Levittown/Neshaminy) of the women’s soccer team and Steve Tyson (fr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) from men’s track & field earned Rookie of the Year honors.  Suresh Ramamurthi was named the Men’s Athletics Coach of the Year for his efforts with the men’s tennis program and Jeff Schellenberger of women’s soccer was picked as the Women’s Athletics Coach of the Year.

Kloeffer

Kloeffer was the first KU women’s tennis player to be named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Player of the Year and also earned a spot on the all-conference first team this season.  She compiled an 11-1 mark playing at first singles and was 15-1 at first doubles.  Kloeffer helped the Golden Bears to their first NCAA East Regional title and an appearance in the NCAA Round of 16, where the team tied for ninth.

Keller

Keller was named third team All-America by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), was a member of both the ABCA and National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-North Atlantic Region first teams. A second-team All-PSAC East pitcher, Keller posted an 11-2 record on the mound for the Golden Bears, tying him for the second most wins in a season by a KU hurler.  He led the team with four saves and established the school career record with 15.  His 22 appearances were also a team-high and his 3.47 earned run average ranked third.  He recorded a win and two saves in the PSAC Championships, helping the Golden Bears to the conference title.  He also received the win in KU’s only victory at the North Atlantic Regional, where the team tied for third.

Kelty

Kelty was tabbed the PSAC East Rookie of the Year and was named to the All-PSAC East first team last fall.  She appeared in all 21 games, starting 16, and finished third on the team with five goals and five assists.  Her 15 points were tied for third on the squad.  The midfielder had two assists in KU’s PSAC semifinal win over Bloomsburg, and had a goal in the team’s 3-2 loss to Indiana (PA) in the conference title game.

Tyson

Tyson won the PSAC indoor and outdoor shot put crowns as a freshman.  His winning throw at the PSAC Outdoor Championships established a stadium record of 50-11 1/2.  He won the shot put at each of his final three outdoor meets and four times overall during the outdoor season.  Tyson competed at the Penn Relays, where he finished 21st in the ‘Eastern’ Flight of the shot put.  During the indoor season, he won the shot put at four of his seven meets.

Ramamurthi

Ramamurthi’s men’s tennis team won a school-record 20 matches en route to titles at the PSAC Championships and the NCAA East Regional.  The team then advanced to the NCAA Round of 16, where the Golden Bears tied for ninth.  In addition to a 20-2 overall mark, KU finished a perfect 5-0 in PSAC play.  The Golden Bears opened the season with a 14-match win streak.  Ramamurthi coached five All-PSAC performers and the conference Player of the Year, as well as the ITA Senior Athlete of the Year.

Schellenberger

Schellenberger claimed the Women’s Coach of the Year for the second straight year and was also picked as the PSAC East Coach of the Year this season.  His team finished 14-5-2 overall and 8-3 in the PSAC East to win the division.  The women’s soccer team advanced to the conference championship game for the first time in school history.  His squad tied the school record for wins, won its second most PSAC contests ever, and tied a season mark with eight shutouts.  The 19 goals allowed by the Golden Bears were the second fewest in KU history.  Schellenberger coached the PSAC Rookie of the Year, seven All-PSAC players and one All-East Region team member.

The athlete, rookie and coach of the year awards are based on 2004-05 accomplishments. Nominees are voted upon by the KU Athletics Department’s coaches and staff.
