KUTZTOWN ATHLETES CHOSEN FOR COACHES AWARDS
KUTZTOWN, PA — With the 2005-06 school year well underway, the
athletic department looks back at the 2004-05 season with the
announcement of last year’s Coaches’ Award winners. The Coach’s
Awards are determined by each team’s coaching staff, based upon
criteria selected by the coaches.
All
recipients and information (including year of eligibility) are from
the 2004-05 school year.
Field
Hockey’s Amanda Behney (jr.
Lyons/Kutztown)
was chosen by head coach Betty Wesner. Behney had six goals and two
assists for 14 points. “Amanda has been one of the most versatile players that
I have ever coached here at KU. Where ever the team needs strength,
I am able to use her, whether it is offense or defense”, said Wesner.
“She has been successful on the forward line, the midfield, and at
the center back position She is always willing to do what is needed
to help the team. She is very unselfish.”
Men’s
tennis’s Lukas Beman (so.
Woodend,
AUSTRALIA)
received the coach’s award from head coach Suresh Ramamurthi. Beman
was 11-6 in singles and 19-4 in doubles.
“Lukas has been and
continues to be the team leader,” Ramamurthi said. “He leads by
example always. He is totally committed to his studies and his
teammates. He motivates and inspires all the players and brings out
their best. He is well liked by both the men’s and women’s team
members. He is also very trustworthy.”
Women’s
basketball’s Jessica Brady (so.
Emmaus/Emmaus)
head coach Janet Malouf. Brady averaged 10.3 ppg. “She improved her
game dramatically from her first year improving to 10 points and
pulling in 5.9 rebounds in her second year,” Malouf said. “She was
the second highest scorer on the team.”
Men’s
soccer’s Collin Dalton (fr.
Carlisle/Big Spring)
was honored by head coach Otto Ormosi. Dalton started in all 19
games played.
Men’s basketball’s Bobby Eberhart (sr.
Lancaster/J.P. McCaskey) was picked by head coach Bernie
Driscoll. Eberhart led the team in points per game with 14.6. He
also contributed with 57 assists, 20 blocks and 37 steals. "Bobby
was an integral member of our men's basketball program. He was a
tremendous leader and much of our success over the recent years can
be attributed to Bobby,” said KU head coach Bernie Driscoll.
Wrestling’s Andy Freas (so.
Wescosville/Emmaus)
was selected by head coach Rob Fisher. Freas was 17-16 wrestling at
285.
Women’s
track & field’s Laura Kline (sr.
Reading/Reading)
was honored by Coach Brian Mondschein. Kline was the 400m hurdles
champion and anchored the winning 4x400m relay at the PSAC
Championships.
Women’s
soccer’s Nikki Marczak (sr. Levittown/Harry S Truman)
received the coach’s award from head coach Jeff Schellenberger. She
played in 20 games and started 14.
Softball’s
Jackie Messina (so. Allentown/Parkland) was recognized by head
coach Judy Lawes. Messina batted .299 last season and had 44 hits
and 14 RBIs. “Jackie received the Coaches Award for her strong
performance and versatility,” said coach Lawes.
Women’s
cross country’s Molly Lare (so.
Bethlehem/Liberty)
was picked by head coach Ray Hoffman. Lare was in the top ten
finishers in five out of her seven races.
Women’s tennis’
Jharna Nansi (so. Mumbai, INDIA) was the recipient of the
coach’s award from head coach Suresh
Ramamurthi. Nansi was 9-3 in singles play and 15-5 in doubles. She
was awarded this because of “her leadership role, her ability
to motivate and inspire all the other team members,” said Ramamurthi. “She
is a big help in communicating with the team and myself. She worked
hard and gave more than 100% effort each time. She truly is a team
person.”
Men’s track and
field’s Mike Provenzano (jr. Carlisle/Carlisle) was
recognized by Coach Brian Mondschein for his efforts in the pole
vault. His best height last year was 15-8, winning the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference Championship in the vault.
Baseball’s Jon Shade (so.
Reading/Muhlenberg) earned the coaches’ award from Coach Chris Blum. Shade played in 39
games and had a batting average of .256. Coach Blum said, “I
wish every team would have the privilege of coaching a player like
Jon Shade.”
Volleyball’s Jennifer Stocker (sr. Easton/Easton) was chosen
by head coach John Gump to receive the coach’s award. Stocker had
155 kills and 102 blocks. Coach Gump said, “Jenn
Stocker was selected as our coaches’ award winner for her dedication
to our program and her work ethic. Jenn always gave her best
effort, both in practice and during competition.”
Women’s
golf’s Tristin Suzenski (so.
Pottstown/St. Pius X)
was given coaches award. She golfed in all 18 matches played and had
an average of 92.1.
Men’s cross
country’s Dan Wilde (so. Lemoyne/Cedar Cliff) was selected by
head coach Ray Hoffman. “Dan is a hard trainer who brings back some
of the old school attitude toward training,” said Coach Hoffman.
“The word ‘rest’ is not in his vocabulary.”
Football’s Derrick Young (jr. York/Central York) received the
coach’s award from head coach Dave Keeny. Young played in ten games
and had 18 tackles.
