VAN WAGNER NAMED PSAC EAST ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

KUTZTOWN, PA – Kutztown University’s Mercedes Van Wagner (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional), of the women’s basketball team, was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Rookie of the Week.

Van Wagner earns the honor for her efforts in Kutztown’s games vs. West Chester and Mansfield last week.  She had a season-high 26 points with 11 rebounds against West Chester.  Van Wagner hit 10-of-12 field goals in the 78-68 loss.  In KU’s 74-73 double-overtime win over Mansfield, Van Wagner scored 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, with five blocks.

For the season, Van Wagner is averaging 9.7 points and 8.3 rebounds.  She is shooting 52.2% (71-of-136) from the field.

Kutztown is 9-9 overall, 2-2 in the PSAC East.  The Golden Bears return to action Wednesday when they host Millersville.

KU WRESTLERS JUMP INTO NATIONAL RANKINGS

KUTZTOWN, PA – The Kutztown University wrestling team has earned the No. 15 spot in the latest poll by the NCAA Division II Coaches Association.

It marks the first time this season that the Golden Bears have been recognized in the poll.

Kutztown stands at 7-2, having won seven of its last eight duals after a season opening loss to Pitt-Johnstown, ranked No. 6 in the poll.  The Golden Bears are 1-2 on the season against teams ranked in the poll with a win over No. 16 Gannon and losses to UPJ and No. 8 Mercyhurst.

The national ranking is more impressive considering KU does not have a wrestler ranked in top eight in his weight class.  The Golden Bears are one of just two teams in the poll without a ranked individual, joining No. 13 Wisconsin-Parkside.

Nebraska-Omaha remained the top ranked team in the nation after winning the Division II National Duals last week.  Augustana (SD) is ranked second and Nebraska-Kearney, Central Oklahoma and Minnesota State-Mankato round out the top five, respectively.

On Friday and Saturday, the Golden Bears travel to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships, to be held at East Stroudsburg.  KU and No. 10 Shippensburg will be the only Division II schools at the competition, with the remaining seven universities wrestling on the Division I level.  Only one KU wrestler expected to see action placed at last year’s PSACs.  Andy Freas (so. Wescosville/Emmaus) finished sixth at 285.

Action on Friday begins at 6:00 PM, with matches resuming on Saturday at 10:00 AM.
