KU
WRESTLERS JUMP INTO NATIONAL RANKINGS
KUTZTOWN,
PA – The Kutztown University wrestling team has earned the
No. 15 spot in the latest poll by the NCAA Division II
Coaches Association.
It marks the first time this season that the Golden Bears
have been recognized in the poll.
Kutztown stands at 7-2, having won seven of its last eight
duals after a season opening loss to Pitt-Johnstown, ranked
No. 6 in the poll. The Golden Bears are 1-2 on the season
against teams ranked in the poll with a win over No. 16
Gannon and losses to UPJ and No. 8 Mercyhurst.
The national ranking is more impressive considering KU does
not have a wrestler ranked in top eight in his weight
class. The Golden Bears are one of just two teams in the
poll without a ranked individual, joining No. 13 Wisconsin-Parkside.
Nebraska-Omaha remained the top ranked team in the nation
after winning the Division II National Duals last week.
Augustana (SD) is ranked second and Nebraska-Kearney,
Central Oklahoma and Minnesota State-Mankato round out the
top five, respectively.
On Friday and Saturday, the Golden Bears travel to the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships,
to be held at East Stroudsburg. KU and No. 10 Shippensburg
will be the only Division II schools at the competition,
with the remaining seven universities wrestling on the
Division I level. Only one KU wrestler expected to see
action placed at last year’s PSACs. Andy Freas (so.
Wescosville/Emmaus) finished sixth at 285.
Action on Friday begins at 6:00 PM, with matches resuming on
Saturday at 10:00 AM.
