WOMEN'S SOCCER DENIED REGIONAL BERTH
KUTZTOWN, PA -- The 2004 Kutztown
University Women's Soccer season came to an abrupt end with the
announcement of the NCAA Championship selections Monday night.
Despite a 14-5-2 overall record,
the Golden Bears were not picked for a second-straight berth in the
NCAA Northeast Regional tournament. Instead, Southampton
(17-1-2), Adelphi (17-3), Indiana (PA) (19-3) and West Chester
(11-7-2) were given the four spots.
Kutztown advanced to the PSAC
Championship game on Sunday, but lost to Indiana (PA), 3-2.
The IUP victory propelled the Indians into the playoffs, after not
appearing in the rankings last week. Kutztown was ranked sixth
last week, but could not overtake West Chester, which was ranked
third and still qualified for regionals despite a first-round PSAC
playoff exit.
The Golden Bears, under 10th year
head coach Jeff Schellenberger, turned in back-to-back 14 win
seasons over the past two years, the most wins in a season in school
history. KU also racked up 17 PSAC/PSAC East wins over the
last two seasons, winning the inaugural PSAC East regular season
title this fall.

KU VOLLEYBALL TEAM
TO FACE ESU WITH PLAYOFF BERTH ON THE LINE
KUTZTOWN, PA – The
Kutztown University volleyball team will battle East Stroudsburg on
Saturday, with the winner of the match earning a Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference (PSAC) Playoff berth.
The regular-season finale for both teams will begin at 11:00 AM
Saturday morning in Keystone Hall. Admission is free.
In what has become a yearly showdown, the teams will square off in
the regular-season finale with a lot on the line. In 2001 and
2002, the teams met on the last day of the season with the winner
qualifying for the PSAC Playoffs. ESU won in 2001, while KU
took the 2002 meeting. Last year, KU’s win over the Warriors
preserved the Bears’ undefeated record in division play and its
first-ever outright PSAC East title.
Kutztown enters the match with 5-4 record in the PSAC East.
The Warriors are also 5-4. East Stroudsburg defeated Kutztown,
3-1, in the teams’ first meeting of the year on October 5.
Shippensburg (7-2 PSAC East) has all but locked up the #1 seed for
the East in the upcoming playoffs, needing only a win over winless
Cheyney on Saturday to make it official. Millersville (6-3)
can claim the #2 seed with a win over West Chester on Saturday.
While the winner of the KU-ESU match will take the third berth, KU
can move up to the #2 seed with a win and Millersville loss
Saturday.
The three teams from the East will square off against the top three
teams from the West at the site of the Western Division Champion
next Friday-Saturday, November 12-13.
