KU WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY ENTERS 2008 RANKED 19th IN DIVISION II
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The Kutztown University women’s cross country team,
which returns the East Region’s top runner from 2007,
enters the 2008 season ranked No. 19 in Division II by
the United States Track and Field and Cross Country
Coaches Association.
KU finished third in the 2007 East
Regionals, led by
Joanna Horstmann (jr. Downingtown/Downingtown West)
who placed third with a t time of 21:38.
Adams State, which finished in the
top spot in 2007, is ranked No. 1 to start the 2008
season. Seattle Pacific, Grand Valley State, Chico State
and Augustana round out the top five.
KU is one of three Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference schools in the top 20, as
Bloomsburg is No. 12 and Shippensburg is No. 17.
The Golden Bears open the season
tonight against at the Lehigh Valley Invitational. The
women will start at 5:30 p.m. The men will run at 6:15
p.m.

TORI PALMER
NAMED NEW KU CHEER COACH
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— Tori Palmer was named the new head coach of
the Kutztown University cheer team.
Palmer, a 2008 graduate from the
University at Albany with a degree in history, comes to
KU after two years as coach of the Lil’ Danes All-Stars
while with the University at Albany. Prior to the Lil’
Danes, she was the freshmen cheer coach for the
Guilderland High School (Guilderland Center, N.Y.) cheer
team for three years.
Since 2003, Palmer has
choreographed more than 65 routines throughout the
northeast for junior high, junior varsity, varsity,
college and all-star cheer teams, many of which went on
to receive regional and national titles.
From 2003 to the present, Palmer
has spent time as the head instructor for the National
Cheerleaders Association in Dallas, Texas. As part of
the NCA, Palmer taught camps and clinics to youth and
high school cheerleaders as well as judge for local and
regional competitions.
Palmer has spent more than 16 years
of cheering with coaching and instructing. She spent
four years cheerleading while at the University at
Albany. In her four years with Albany, she attended the
NCA’s Collegiate Cheerleading Competition in Daytona,
Fla., with appearances in the finals for Division I
small coed for two of the four years. Palmer is a 2008
recipient of the Spirit Award from the Great Dane
Athletic Awards.

KU FIELD HOCKEY RANKED NO. 5 IN NFHCA PRESEASON POLL
KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The
Kutztown University field hockey team is ranked
No. 5 in the
Division II preseason poll released Tuesday by
the
National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
Bloomsburg starts the season ranked No. 1 with
University of Massachusetts-Lowell second. Indiana (Pa.)
and Shippensburg are third and fourth, respectively.
The
Golden
Bears, who were ranked No. 1 in the nation for
the first time in school history last season, return 15
letterwinners and seven starters. KU finished 17-5
overall and 11-2 in the
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.
Kelley Healey (sr.
Toms River,
N.J./Toms River North), an All-PSAC first team
forward and an ESPN the Magazine
All-America second team member, is the Golden
Bears top returner after scoring a team-best 17 goals
and 14 assists.
Healey
is one of four 20-point scorers from last season
returning for the Golden Bears. The others are
Lyndsay Butler (sr. Annanda, N.J./Summit),
Anne Waapu (so. Hastings, NEW ZEALAND) and
Carrie Healey (jr.
Toms River,
N.J./Toms River North).
Led by
29th-year
head coach Betty Wesner, who was named the
2007 PSAC
Coach of the Year and the NFHCA South Region
Coach of the Year, KU will open the season at 7 p.m.
Sept. 3 against East Stroudsburg at
University Field.

BENCH, KUHN JOIN KU WOMEN’S SOCCER COACHING STAFF
KUTZTOWN,

— Kutztown University head women’s soccer coach Erik Burstein
announced the addition of two assistant coaches for the 2008
season.

Brittney
Bench,
a graduate of Liberty University, and Jen Kuhn, a St.
Joseph’s University graduate, will join the Golden Bear coaching
staff this season.
Kuhn was a
goalkeeper with Division I Saint Joe’s University, finishing
tied for fourth all-time in career wins with nine. She was fifth
in career saves with 141 and shutouts with five. The 2008
graduate posted a career-high five wins and had a team-best 1.73
goals against average in 2006. She recorded shutouts against
Wagner and Richmond that season.
In 2004,
she ranked in the program’s top five in shutouts in a season
with three and saves with 79. She won the Atlantic 10 Rookie of
the Week award during the 2004 season.
In high
school, Kuhn was a two-time All-Pennsylvania and All-County team
member with Conrad Weiser, leading the Scouts to the 2003 Berks
County title. She was selected as an All-American in 2003.
Kuhn, age
22, graduated from St. Joe’s with a bachelor’s degree in
psychology.
“I am very
excited to have Jen as part of the coaching staff,” Burstein
said. “Her experience and knowledge of the goalkeeping position
will be a tremendous asset to our program. I could not be more
excited. Jen is a quality coach who will greatly improve the
goalkeepers in our program and I really look forward to working
with her.”
Bench was
a four-year varsity member with Division I Liberty’s women’s
soccer team. At forward, she started in 13 games and played in
18 as a senior, scoring two goals and two assists. She also had
two goals in each of her first three seasons at Liberty.
During her
sophomore year, she did not score during the regular season, but
in the conference tournament, she netted two, including the
game-winner in the second round. For that, she was named to the
Big South All-Tournament team.
She was a
high school graduate of Owen J. Roberts, where she was an
all-state selection every season.
Bench
graduated from Liberty in 2007 with bachelor’s degree in science
of religion. She will continue her pursuit of a masters at KU in
professional counseling, which she started at Liberty.
“Brittney
is a terrific addition to our coaching staff,” Burstein said.
“Her knowledge of the game is fantastic and she has a very clear
understanding of what we are trying to achieve. There is no
question her experiences will provide tremendous insight into
the things we do and how we can do them better. She is going to
be a great fit and I am very happy to have her.”
The Golden
Bears will open their season against Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference Western Division newcomer Mercyhurst on Aug. 30 at
Keystone Field.
