BENCH, KUHN JOIN KU WOMEN’S SOCCER COACHING STAFF

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Kutztown University head women’s soccer coach Erik Burstein announced the addition of two assistant coaches for the 2008 season.

Brittney Bench Jen Kuhn

Brittney Bench, a graduate of Liberty University, and Jen Kuhn, a St. Joseph’s University graduate, will join the Golden Bear coaching staff this season.

Kuhn was a goalkeeper with Division I Saint Joe’s University, finishing tied for fourth all-time in career wins with nine. She was fifth in career saves with 141 and shutouts with five. The 2008 graduate posted a career-high five wins and had a team-best 1.73 goals against average in 2006. She recorded shutouts against Wagner and Richmond that season.

In 2004, she ranked in the program’s top five in shutouts in a season with three and saves with 79. She won the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week award during the 2004 season.

In high school, Kuhn was a two-time All-Pennsylvania and All-County team member with Conrad Weiser, leading the Scouts to the 2003 Berks County title. She was selected as an All-American in 2003.

Kuhn, age 22, graduated from St. Joe’s with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

“I am very excited to have Jen as part of the coaching staff,” Burstein said. “Her experience and knowledge of the goalkeeping position will be a tremendous asset to our program. I could not be more excited. Jen is a quality coach who will greatly improve the goalkeepers in our program and I really look forward to working with her.”

Bench was a four-year varsity member with Division I Liberty’s women’s soccer team. At forward, she started in 13 games and played in 18 as a senior, scoring two goals and two assists. She also had two goals in each of her first three seasons at Liberty.

During her sophomore year, she did not score during the regular season, but in the conference tournament, she netted two, including the game-winner in the second round. For that, she was named to the Big South All-Tournament team.

She was a high school graduate of Owen J. Roberts, where she was an all-state selection every season.

Bench graduated from Liberty in 2007 with bachelor’s degree in science of religion. She will continue her pursuit of a masters at KU in professional counseling, which she started at Liberty.

“Brittney is a terrific addition to our coaching staff,” Burstein said. “Her knowledge of the game is fantastic and she has a very clear understanding of what we are trying to achieve. There is no question her experiences will provide tremendous insight into the things we do and how we can do them better. She is going to be a great fit and I am very happy to have her.”

The Golden Bears will open their season against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division newcomer Mercyhurst on Aug. 30 at Keystone Field.
