KU WOMEN'S
BOWLING RANKED NO. 8 IN NATION
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The Kutztown University women’s bowling team has received its
highest national ranking in program history, moving up eight spots
to No. 8 in the National Tenpins Coaches Association Poll.
KU (31-11), which is
currently tied for second in the Northeast Conference, has 327
points to move to eighth from 16th.
Ranked No. 1 in the
nation is Vanderbilt University with 573 points, moving up from No.
2. The University of Nebraska (509), Fairleigh Dickinson University
(488), Delaware State University (422) and the University of
Maryland Eastern Shore (384) round out the top five.
Arkansas State
University (376) and New Jersey City University (340) are just ahead
of KU in sixth and seventh, respectively.
The Golden Bears
will return to the lanes on Jan. 10 with the New Years Knockdown at
St. Francis University.

BEN NAMED PSAC EAST PLAYER OF
THE WEEK
KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Kutztown
University's
Dave Ben
(sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) was named the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Player of the Week on
Dec. 22.
Ben averaged 26 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists
in a 2-0 week for Kutztown last week in wins over District of
Columbia and Philadelphia, helping the Golden Bears improve to 8-0
on the year. He shot 56.8 percent from the field (21-for-37) and 75
percent from the charity stripe (6-for-8) and also averaged 2.0
steals per game.
He matched his career high with 32 points on 14-of-23
shooting and 4-of-6 from three-point range and also added four
rebounds and seven assists against UDC. He 17 of his 32 points in
the second half as KU turned a six-point halftime lead into a
39-point win. He then scored 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting along
with six boards and four assists vs. Philadelphia. He also had just
four turnovers in the two games.
Through eight games, Ben is averaging 21.6 points, hitting 64-of-121
field goals (52.9 percent), 12-of-37 3-pointers (32.4 percent) and 33-of-47 free
throws (70.2 percent). He is averaging 5.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists
per game.
Kutztown (8-0) returns to the hardwood on Dec. 30 vs. Penn
State-Abington.

KU IN SIXTH PLACE OF DIXON TROPHY STANDINGS AFTER FALL SEASON
KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Kutztown University is
in sixth place after the fall season as the Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference announced the 2008-09 Dixon Trophy standings
Friday.
KU has 72 points, behind leader California
(Pa.), which has 90.5. Mercyhurst has 85 points, Bloomsburg 83.5,
Indiana (Pa.) 79.5 and East Stroudsburg 74, rounding out the top
five.
The Golden Bears lead Shippensburg by a
half-point, 71.5, and Slippery Rock by 1 1/2, 70.5. Edinboro (69.5)
and West Chester (67.5) finish out the top 10.
KU earned three points from men’s soccer, five
from men’s cross country, four from wrestling and 9.5 from football.
Altogether, the men’s sports scored KU 21.5 points.
On the women’s side, KU picked up 14 points
from cross country, 12 from golf, 11.5 from field hockey, eight from
soccer and five from volleyball.
The Dixon Trophy is awarded to the most
successful institution in the PSAC, based on its 12 best finishes,
six men, six men. Points are given based on the school’s finish in
PSAC postseason and regular-season play.
The award, in its 14th year, is named in honor
of F. Eugene Dixon, Jr., the former chairman of the Pennsylvania
State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors.
The final standings will be announced after the
spring sports season.

BOWER, DOVEY HONORED BY LEHIGH VALLEY SMALL COLLEGE MEDIA
ORGANIZATION
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— Kutztown University's
Mark Bower (sr. West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford),
men’s basketball forward, and
Katie Dovey (jr. Willow Hill/Fannett-Metal), women’s
basketball guard, were named to the Lehigh Valley Small College
Basketball Media Organization’s Unsung Hero teams Tuesday.
The award is given to the players who quietly make big impact on the
court for their team.
“Mark is a great guy,” KU men’s head coach Bernie Driscoll said. “He
does all the little things that help our team be successful.”
The men’s team is already off to a 6-0 start to the 2008-09, with
Bower averaging 4.8 points and 18.2 minutes a game. He’s played in
all six games and started in four. He has 16 rebounds and he is
shooting 9-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Bower played in at least 27 games both his sophomore and junior
seasons, combining to make 58-of-121 shots from the field. His
sophomore year, he was 6-of-13 from beyond the 3-point arc.
Dovey has helped the women's basketball team run out to a 6-0 start,
averaging 5.4 points and 18.4 minutes per game. She’s started in two
contests and played in five. She is 5-of-7 from the free-throw line
and has 16 rebounds, five assists and two steals.
“She’s improved dramatically from her first two years at KU,” KU
women’s head coach Janet Malouf said. “She’s playing multiple
positions. She’s doing everything we ask her to do. She’s really
giving us a lift.”
Against Lincoln this season, Dovey scored a season-high 12 points as
the Lions focused in on other KU players.
“You can’t ignore her,” Malouf said. “She helps our program out so
much.”
Dovey has been honored as a PSAC Scholar-Athlete both her freshman
and sophomore years, while making the Dean’s List in all four of her
semesters at KU.
She played in 44 games over her first two seasons, going 36-of-92
from the field.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will be back in action on Dec. 17
at Keystone Arena. The women’s team will kick off the doubleheader
with a non-conference tilt with Columbia Union at 6 p.m. The men
will tip off at 8 p.m. against the District of Columbia, also a
non-conference contest.

THREE KU WOMEN'S SOCCER PLAYERS HONORED BY NSCAA/ADIDAS
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The Kutztown University women’s soccer team had three members
named to the 2008 NSCAA/Adidas NCAA Division II Women’s All-Atlantic
Region teams Wednesday.

Chelsea Deeter (so. Langhorne/Neshaminy) was named to the
second team, while forward
Chelsea Bressler (fr. Cleona/Annville-Cleona) and
midfielder
Jen Tice (so. Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional) were
named to the third team.
Deeter, a co-captain led the Golden Bears defensively, helping
secure seven shutouts and limiting opponents to a 1.01 goals against
average.
Deeter, who started in 19 games for the Golden Bears, is a two-time
All-PSAC East first team member, and she was an honorable mention by
Daktronics this season.
"For the past two seasons, Chelsea Deeter has been the backbone of
our defense and she has developed into an outstanding leader,” KU
head coach Erik Burstein said. “Chelsea made vast improvements in
her game last spring and those improvements have really helped her
become a strong central defender. She is deeply committed to her
development and I know she will continue to work hard to help this
team achieve their goals."
Bressler, who became the second KU women’s soccer player to be named
PSAC East Rookie of the Year, scored a team-high 10 goals and had
three assists. She had three game-winning goals and 49 shots, while
starting in 16 games and playing in 20.
She also was a second team selection by Daktronics.
"Chelsea Bressler had a great first season for us and I am confident
she will only get better,” Burstein said. “She has excellent speed,
great balance and tight control of the ball. She is unbelievable in
1-v-1 situations. I am really looking forward to watching Chelsea
develop over the spring season and I
am confident this is just the beginning for her."
Tice, a team co-captain as a sophomore, also was honored by the PSAC
for
the second straight year, being named to the All-PSAC East second
team. She posted two goals and two assists with one game-winner,
while playing in 19 games.
"Jen has been improving each and every year and I truly believe her
best is yet to come,” Burstein said. “Her leadership in the midfield
and her undying work ethic is unlike anything I have ever seen. She
places high demands and expectations on herself, and her teammates,
and she is constantly raising the bar
for this program. She is a true leader in every sense of the word."
The
Golden Bears finished the 2008 campaign with their seventh straight
10-plus-win season, a school record. En route to a 12-6-2 record,
the Golden Bears used a winning streak of eight games and an
unbeaten streak of 11 games to qualify for the PSAC playoffs.

KU’s McQUADE NAMED PSAC EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— Kutztown University’s
Melissa McQuade (fr. Pittsburgh/Shaler), of the
women’s basketball team, has been named the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Player of the
Week.
McQuade earns the honor for the second time this season
after leading Kutztown to a pair of wins. McQuade averaged a
double-double with 16 points and 11.5 rebounds, while also
averaging 3.5 steals and shooting 51.9 percent (14-27) from
the field.
In KU’s win at Columbia Union, she scored 17 points
with 10 rebounds, two assists and three steals. At Penn
State-Berks, she scored 15 points, with 13 rebounds, four
assists and four steals.
Through six games, McQuade is averaging 18.3 points,
10.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.3 steals per game. She is
shooting 54.7 percent from the floor (41-75), 50 percent
from 3-point range (9-18) and 90.5 percent from the free
throw line (19-21).
The Golden Bears are 6-0 on the season for the first
time in program history. KU returns to action a week from Wednesday, Dec.
17, when it hosts Columbia Union at 6 p.m. at Keystone Hall.

GOLDEN BEAR FOOTBALL TEAM
AWARDS RELEASED
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The Kutztown University football team announced their 2008
season awards, as voted on by the players.

The team Most Valuable Player award
went to defensive back Cory Porrino (sr. Orwigsburg/Blue
Mountain H.S.). He had eight tackles for loss totaling
25 yards, while recording 64 total tackles on the year.
Porrino had one sack, one fumble recovery and two
interceptions.
The Offensive MVP award went to
running back Dontay Wilson (jr. Stamford, CONN./Stamford
H.S.). Wilson led the offense in rushing with 884 yards
on 120 carries for an average of 7.4 yards-per-carry. His
98.2 yards per game average ranked third in the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference. Wilson scored seven touchdowns,
one of which came off his season-long 73-yard rush.
Mike Gardier (jr. Dunmore/Dunmore), safety,
received the Most Valuable Player award for the Golden Bear
defense. Gardier was second on the team in tackles with 72,
seven of which were for a loss totaling 28 yards. He ranked
eighth in the PSAC with an average of 8.0 tackles-per-game.
Gardier compiled three sacks and forced three fumbles on the
season.
The Special Teams MVP award went to
punter/placekicker Ryan Nye (sr. Bernville/Holy Name H.S.).
Nye was fifth in the PSAC with 41.2 yards-per-punt average.
He had four kicks of 50-yards or more and his longest went
70-yards. Nye placed five punts inside the 20 yard line. On
kickoffs, Nye averaged 56.4 yards and had two touchbacks.
The captains, as elected by the team,
were Porrino, defensive tackle Nick Cresta (sr.
Wallingford/Strath Haven), running back Maurice Adams
(sr. West Chester/Henderson), and offensive lineman
Darrell Martin (sr. Stroudsburg/Stroudsburg).
The Jody Cwik Memorial Award went to
linebacker Sam McKellar (sr. Allentown/Dieruff). The
award is for the player most respected by teammates for his
on and off the field contributions to the program. McKellar
recorded 68 tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack and
forced three fumbles.
