and
Joanna Horstmann (sr. Downingtown/Downingtown)
added one final flourish to their stellar careers by
being named to the United States
Track and Field Cross-Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA)
All-Academic Track and Field Team. In addition, the Kutztown women’s
track team earned a distinguished spot on the 2009
Division II All-Academic Track
and Field Teams.
“My staff
and I are extremely happy of our student-athletes,” coach Ray
Hoffman said. “To have your program recognized as an Academic All
American team is a great honor and shows that our
student-athletes have the skills necessary to achieve great success
in both the classroom and on the track.”
Boutsikaris finished in 16th place in the hammer throw at the
NCAA Division II Championships at Angelo State University in San
Angelo, Texas in May. Earlier this year,
Boutsikaris placed
second in the hammer throw in the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference Championships at Millersville with a throw of 187-5,
which was his farthest of the season, Last season he placed first in
the javelin and third in the hammer throw at the PSAC Championships.
Boutsikaris, who
graduated with a marketing degree in May, departs Kutztown as the
school record holder in the hammer throw and fourth on the javelin
all-time list.
“Chris
came to KU as a walk-on looking for a chance to be a member of the
program, not only did Chris become a member of the program but one
of the top athletes in our track and field programs history,”
Hoffman said.
Meanwhile, Horstmann, a four-time All-American, overcame incredible
odds to become of the top track & field and cross-country scholars
in the nation. Horstmann closed her cross country career at Kutztown
University with a 50th-place finish at the NCAA Division II
Championships. On the track, Horstmann broke the KU indoor mile
(5:03.42) and 1000m school records (2:59.80) and was a member of the
KU record setting distance-medley relay and 4 x 800m relay teams.
“Joanna's
a great story,” Hoffman said. “In high school, Joanna was diagnosed
with a learning disability and was unsure if she could balance being
a student-athlete at the collegiate level. Joanna not only balanced
her academics and athletics, but took it to the next level.”
To
qualify for the Academic All-American team, the student-athlete must
have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met
the NCAA Division II Indoor or Outdoor automatic or provisional
qualifying standard in their respective event.
A total of 64 Division II
women’s track and field programs were recognized as 2009 USTFCCCA
All-Academic Track and Field Teams.
For the
second year in a row, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
landed the highest number of member schools on the women’s list.
Eleven of those 64 schools came from the PSAC - California
University, Clarion University, Edinboro University, Indiana
University, Kutztown University, Lock Haven University, Mansfield
University, Millersville University, Shippensburg University,
Slippery Rock University, and West Chester University.
“Were
very proud of both Chris and Joanna,” Hoffman said. “I think both
Chris and Joanna show that with the right focus and determination
you can defy the odds and be the best at what you do.”
