Denlinger breaks Divison II home run record

KUTZTOWN, Pa. Steph Denlinger (sr. Harleysville/Souderton) broke the NCAA Division II career home run record on Saturday morning. The three-run home run in the fourth inning of a 10-0 win over West Virginia State gave Denlinger the 63rd of her career, eclipsing Jackie Aiken’s 62 set from 1994-97 while at Wisconsin-Parkside.

It took Denlinger only 186 games to break the record, compared to the 264 it took Aiken. She hit 16 home runs as a freshman and 24 home runs in her sophomore year.  The 40 home runs after two seasons were already the KU career-home run record and the 24 in the sophomore year set the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference record for single-season home runs.

Denlinger tacked on another 16 home runs in her junior season to give her 56 entering her senior season. She hit her sixth homer of the season and 62nd of her career last Saturday to tie Aiken for the record.

The Golden Bears, not even in PSAC Division play yet, have more than thirty games remaining for Denlinger to add to her record.

Denlinger, who plays first base, has earned several awards in her three years at KU, including the 2006 PSAC East Rookie of the Year and the 2007 PSAC East Player of the Year.

She entered the 2009 season batting .400, with 185 hits in 462 at-bats. She had 43 doubles, a triple and 170 RBIs. She also had 163 runs scored, while being issued 123 walks.

Driscoll named PSAC East Coach of the Year, Ben Player of the Year

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — With the NCAA tournament just around the bend for the 2008-09 Kutztown University men’s basketball team, the awards are pouring in for the best team in school history.

KU head coach Bernie Driscoll was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Coach of the Year Wednesday after leading the Golden Bears to a 13-1 division record. The 13 wins were a school record and gave KU its second straight PSAC East title, first outright since 1987-88.

Dave Ben (sr. Coatesville/Coatesville) was honored as the PSAC East Player of the Year, averaging 21.1 points per game.

Ben, along with Stephen Dennis (jr. West Chester/Henderson), were named to the All-PSAC first team, while teammates Ryan Washington (so. Philadelphia/Wissahickon) and Andre Woodlin (sr. Philadelphia/Central) were named to the second team.

Ben also was a first-team Daktronics All-Atlantic Region member, and Dennis was named to the second team.

Ben was named the PSAC East Player of the Year for his amazing senior year at KU. He set the school's all-time scoring record and continues to add on the points as he sits 24 points away from 2,000.

The 6-4 guard has averaged double-digits in all four of his seasons at KU, with 2008-09 being his best season at 21.1 points per game, third in the PSAC.

Ben was named the PSAC East Rookie of the Year in 2005-06. He is a three-time All-PSAC first team member, as well as a three-time Lehigh Valley College Media Organization Peter Nevins Player of the Year. He holds the school records for free throws (502) and field goals (642). He's second in 3-pointers with 190, fourth in rebounds with 655, and fifth in assists with 318. In 2005-06,

Dennis is the PSAC's leading scorer with 21.7 points per game. He's shooting 50.1 percent from the floor, and has been a force in the playoffs, scoring 98 points in three playoffs games entering the NCAA tournament. He set a career-high of 32 points in a win over Slippery Rock in the PSAC semifinals days after scoring a then-career-high 31 points over Mansfield in the quarterfinals.

With another year to play, Dennis is in third place on KU's all-time scoring list and on pace to score more than 2,000 in his career. Dennis has averaged 18.2 points per game over his three-year career.

Dennis was named the PSAC East Rookie of the Year in 2006-07, and also was an All-PSAC East first team member as a sophomore. He was a second team member as a freshman. Also as a freshman, he was named to the NCAA Division II Bulletin All-Freshman team.

For Woodlin, this is the second time he has been named to PSAC East second team. He has had his best season at KU, starting in 29 games and playing in all 30. He's averaged 14.6 points per game, which is 14th in the PSAC. He's shot a team-best 44.1 percent from 3, making 41 from beyond the arc. He's pulling down 4.9 rebounds per game, has 78 of his career 177 assists, 63 steals and 11 blocks.

Washington, who was last season’s PSAC East Rookie of the Year, posts double-digits, averaging 13.1 points per game. He’s the team’s leading shot blocker with 63 and averages 8.5 rebounds a game, sixth in the PSAC. He’s also the team’s leading shooter, making 61.5 percent of his field goals (163-of-265), second in the PSAC.

This season was the school record seventh straight year that ninth-year head coach Driscoll has led the Golden Bears to the PSAC playoffs. It is the longest active streak in the PSAC East and second longest in the league, as Edinboro qualified for the playoffs for its ninth straight season. This also is the seventh straight winning season for KU, as Driscoll has won 129 of his school record 140 wins in the last seven years. He set the school record for coaching wins, earning his 137th in an 82-76 win against Cheyney on Feb. 25.

This will be the first season KU is in the NCAA tournament under Driscoll. It’s just the second time in school history as the 1987-88 squad went to the NCAA East Regionals.

KU, which is ranked 20th in Division II, will travel to Erie, Pa., to play West Virginia State in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional quarterfinals. KU, the No. 3 seed in the region, will tip off against the sixth seed at noon Saturday at Hammermill Center on the campus of Gannon University.

The 20-win season is tied for second most in a single season and the 10 PSAC East wins ranks first for a single season.

McQuade was a first-team PSAC East selection after leading the Golden Bears in multiple statistical categories. McQuade broke the school record for single-season rebounds with 280, eclipsing the former record of 253 held by Missy Boettger. Mcquade averaged a double-double on the season with her team high 15.8 points per game and 10.0 rebounds per game averages, and tallied 11 double-doubles throughout the season.

With 714 career points after two seasons, the 5-10 guard is on pace to join the 1,000-point club in her junior year, a feat only accomplished by 11 players in their careers at KU. McQuade was named the PSAC East Player of the Week four times in the 2008-09 season.

Wisemiller led the conference in 3-pointers with 81, while finishing just behind McQuade with an average of 15.8 points per game. Wisemiller had a career-high 27 points in a win over Lock Haven and made a career-high six 3s in a win over Millersville. The junior guard has 707 points after three seasons and will look to join the 1,000-point club along with McQuade next season. Wisemiller led KU on the defensive end of the floor with 33 blocks and had a career-best 145 rebounds.

With McQuade and Wisemiller both set to return in 2009, the outlook for next season looks bright for coach Malouf and the Golden Bears.
