KUTZTOWN UNIVERSITY
WOMEN'S BOWLING
JOINS NORTHEAST CONFERENCE
KUTZTOWN,
Pa.
—
Kutztown University Director of Athletics
Greg Bamberger has
announced that the Golden Bear women's bowling program has
accepted an invitation as an associate member in the Northeast
Conference's new women's bowling league starting in the 2008-09
season.
"This is a good situation for our women's bowling program,"
Bamberger said. "The team
was the only one of our 23 varsity sports without a conference
championship opportunity, so this is perfect for our
student-athletes. It is also a good fit geographically, allowing our team to
compete against some of the top bowling programs in the country."
KU, which rolled out a women's bowling team for the first time
in school history last season, joins
Fairleigh Dickinson, St. Francis (N.Y.), Sacred Heart, Long
Island, Saint Peter's and Adelphi.
Fairleigh Dickinson, St. Francis (N.Y.), Sacred Heart and Long
Island are full-time members, while KU, St. Peter's and Adelphi
are associate members.
"The NEC is excited to play a role in the growth of women's
bowling, "NEC Commissioner
Brenda Weare said.
"The institutions that comprise our league have a strong history
of success, highlighted by a national championship. We are proud
to provide more opportunity for these teams as well as
student-athletes across the NEC."
The Golden Bears, who finished 44-59 last season, competed as an
independent.
"I think that joining the NEC is a great thing for the growth of
the NCAA women's bowling program at KU," KU second-year head
coach Joe Ambrose
said. "The format of the matches is very unique, which will
combine both traditional and baker play. Having the opportunity
to compete for both a conference and national championship is
awesome for our student-athletes."
Bowling is the 22nd sport that the NEC sponsors. Entering its
28th year as a Division I athletic league, the NEC continues to
grow stronger in women's bowling with the prior accomplishments
of its full-time and associate members.
Fairleigh Dickinson won the NCAA National Championship just two
years ago and Sacred Heart is the defending ECAC champion with
Adelphi claiming the runner-up position at the prestigious
championship meet. All three programs, as well as St. Francis
(N.Y.), were amongst the nation's top teams last season
according to the National Ten Pin Coaches' Association Poll.
The NEC's season will run from November into March, culminating
with the conference championship meet at pre-determined host Fairleigh Dickinson. Prior to the NEC championships, which are
tentatively scheduled for March 19-22, the league will sponsor
regular season play, which will follow a modified round-robin
format.
Kutztown's 22 other varsity sports are members of, and compete
for championships in, the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference.
