names Lance Assistant Cheer Team Advisor
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The Kutztown University Department of Intercollegiate
Athletics Department has named Alison Lance as Assistant Cheer
Team Advisor.

A former Kutztown cheerleader, Lance
has over 16 years of cheerleading experience. Lance, who served
as the cheer team captain during the 2008-09 academic year, will
graduate in December 2009 with a B.S. degree in general studies
with a concentration in sociology. During her time as a
cheerleader at Kutztown, Lance helped the Golden Bears to a
fourth-place finish at the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA)
nationals last year. Lance was also named MVP of the Cheer Team
following the 2007-08 and 2008-09 years.
In addition to conducting
cheerleading stunt clinics for high school and elementary
schools around the area, Lance started a chapter called Kutztown
University Students of Ailing Mothers and Fathers (KUAMF), a
peer support group for students dealing with the death or
terminal illness of a loved one. Prior to attending Kutztown,
Lance spent a year at Northampton Community College where she
started a cheerleading team and coached a cheerleading team that
cheered for a Pop Warner football team.
A graduate of nearby Phillipsburg
(NJ) High School, Lance currently works as a mentor who works
with adults that have schizophrenia and bi-polar disorders.
Lance received quite a few awards in high school. She received
the Skyland Conference all-star award and the UCA all-star
award.

KU names Piparato Cheer Team Advisor
KUTZTOWN, Pa.

The Kutztown University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics
Department has named Crystal Piparato as the Cheer Team
Advisor.

Piparato brings a wealth of
experience to Kutztown University. An AACCA certified coach,
Piparato is well known throughout the cheerleading industry.
Piparato was recently the head cheerleading coach at Penn
State-Hazleton.
During her time as cheerleading
coach at PSU-Hazleton, Piparato was instrumental in fund raising
activities and helping the cheerleaders and become more active
within the community. Piparato also spent time as a Head
Instructor with Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) in
Memphis. She instructed and managed camps consisting of up to
300 cheerleaders. In addition, Piparato led crisis management
discussions, trained coaches, developed practice schedules and
safety techniques.
Piparato, who has a Master’s degree
in Business Education from Bloomsburg University, is a 2005
graduate of Penn State University where she earned a B.S. degree
in business and marketing. Piparato is currently studying to
obtain her D.B.A. in Business Leadership.

Wilson earns
PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week honors
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— After enjoying a career-day at rain soaked Saint Anselm,
Golden Bear running back
Dontay
Wilson (Stamford, CT./Stamford) was named Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference Eastern Division
Offensive Player of the Week.
Wilson ran wild for a personal-best 174 yards and added two
touchdowns. Wilson had a one-yard plunge into the end zone in
the first half and a 77-yard score that proved to be the game
winner midway through the fourth quarter.
The
senior running back is picking up right where he left off in the
2008 season, in which he led the PSAC in yards per carry average at 7.4. He rushed 26 times
for an average of 6.7 yards per carry.
Wilson rushed for 162 yards and two TDs against St. Anselm in
last season's opener, en route to earning a PSAC East first-team
selection.
Wilson and the Golden Bears will travel to Clarion on Saturday,
September 5 for a 6 p.m. kickoff.

Football
opener moved up
KUTZTOWN, PA
(August 27, 2009) –
The Kutztown University season-opening football game scheduled
for Saturday August 29, 2009 against Saint Anselm College has
been changed to a 10:00 a.m. kickoff at Grappone Stadium in
Manchester (NH). The game, which was originally scheduled to
begin at 1:30 p.m., was moved up because the area could be
affected by Tropical Storm Danny. The game will be broadcast
live on WEEU (830-AM).

Golden Bears wrestling releases
2009-10 schedule
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
—
The 2009-10 Kutztown University wrestling schedule will take
the Golden Bears on the road for all but four of their
contests.
The season starts off with
the Washington and Jefferson Open on Saturday, November 14 at 9 a.m.
On December 5, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
Championships will be held in Edinboro.
The Golden Bears will
finally arrive home on Saturday, January 9 with a meet
against Muhlenberg. KU will hold home meets
with Franklin & Marshall, York, Mercyhurst and Millersville in February.
Seniors David Zeek
(Newtown/Council Rock North) and Scott Snyder
(Slatington/Northern Lehigh), along with junior John
Paukovits (Northampton/Northampton) will be key
returnees for the Golden Bears.
In 2008, Zeek was 22-7 with
a fifth place finish at the NCAA East Regional, while Snyder
finished 23-9 and placed third at the East Regional.
Paukovits had a 23-10 record and a third place finish at the
PSAC Championships.

Trip to Alaska
highlights 2009-10 swim schedule
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The recently released 2009-10 schedule will see the Kutztown
University women's swimming team trek to climate extremes with a
trip to chilly Alaska and a 10-day stay in the tropical warmth
of Florida.
The
Golden Bears will take on the University of Alaska-Fairbanks for
meets on October 30 and 31. Alaska-Fairbanks will then make the
coast-to-coast trip on January 18 for a meet at KU.
From
January 3-12 the Golden Bears travel to Ft. Lauderdale for their
Florida Training Trip, which includes the Bob Mowerson Sprint
Meet on January 6.
The season opens up on Saturday, October 3 against Shippensburg
and West Chester, at Shippensburg. KU will host the Golden Bear
Invitational on November 20 and 21 at the Kutztown Pool.
Senior
Steph Jeppesen (Bethlehem/Liberty) returns after a
record-setting 2008. At the NCAA Championships, Jeppesen set KU
records in the 100 breast (1:03.94), 200 breast (2:16.99) and
200 IM (2:05.49). Her time in the 200-yard breast earned her a
second place finish and All-American honors.
Also
returning for KU, is junior
Alex Crigler (West Lawn/Wilson) and sophomore
Jordan Shapiro (Trenton, N.J./Princeton). Crigler placed
in the top three all-time at KU in the 500 free, 1,000 free and
1,650 free. Shapiro ranks number two all time at KU in the 200
backstroke with a time of 59.74.

The Kutztown University field hockey team is ranked No. 5 in the
Division II preseason poll released Tuesday by the National
Field Hockey Coaches Association.

Three-time defending national champion Bloomsburg starts the
season ranked No. 1 with University
of Massachusetts-Lowell second. Bloomsburg, which is also
selected as the favorite in the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference Eastern Division, received nine first-place votes and
99 overall votes.
Indiana (Pa.) and Shippensburg each received 66 votes to rank
tied for third.
The Golden Bears and Bentley College were tied for fifth with 50
overall points. Bentley received one first-place vote, as well.
KU, after finishing 13-6 overall and 5-3 in the PSAC East in
2008, will look for veteran leadership by captains

Coach
Betty Wesner, entering her 30th season, was named the
PSAC Coach of the Year after receiving her 300th career victory

national contender for this 2009 season!” said Wesner.
KU will start off the season Saturday,
August 29th when it hosts Merrimack at 5 p.m. on University
Field. Conference play will start on Monday, September 7th when
the Golden Bears travel to Bloomsburg for a 6 p.m. contest.

Snipes joins Golden Bear football coaching staff

KUTZTOWN, Pa. —
The Kutztown University football program has announced that
Marvin Snipes has been added to the staff as the defensive
ends coach.
Snipes will make his coaching debut after a standout career with
the Lafayette from 2003-06.
"I am beyond excited," says Snipes "I am just pumped to get back
into football. I worked a camp at Lehigh a few weeks ago with
the coaches and it was cool to be back and with the coaches."
"The coaches have great things to say about this team, and coach
[Tim] Tobin has great things planned with the defensive line. I
want to bring my presence to the team and the ultimate goal is
to get to the playoffs and win a National Championship."
“I got an e-mail from him expressing interest in coaching,” says
head coach Ray Monica “and the more I talked to him the more I
saw that he fit into what we looking for.”
In his senior season at defensive end, he helped lead the
Leopards to their third Patriot League championship.
He began his promising career by earning rookie of the year
honors by his coaches after recording two sacks and three
tackles for loss in '03. Snipes enjoyed a stellar sophomore year
in which he had career highs in tackles (46), tackles for loss
(12.5) and sacks (6.0).
In Snipes junior season in '05, he was selected to the
first-team All-Patriot League after helping the Leopards reach a
second-straight league title. He started in all 12 games,
recording 37 tackles, six tackles for loss, with a fumble
recovery and forced fumble.
Entering his senior season, Snipes was named co-captain and
chosen as a preseason second-team All-American by Lindy's
College Football Preview. For the second consecutive year,
Snipes was a first-team All Patriot League honoree.
Snipes received his Bachelor of Art in Anthropology and
Sociology from Lafayette College in 2007. Born in Los Angeles,
C.A., and raised in Philadelphia, Snipes is the son of Kym and
the late Marvin Snipes, Sr.

Cross country poll picks KU
women fourth, men tenth in PSAC
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
—
The preseason coaches' poll was released Friday afternoon for
the Kutztown University men's and women's cross country teams.
The women were selected to fourth place in the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference (PSAC), while the men were picked to
finish 10th of 15.
Shippensburg was the unanimous favorite to win the PSAC on the
women's side. Slippery Rock and Edinboro were picked second and
third, respectively. Millersville was chosen after the Golden
Bears to round out the top five.
On the men's side, Edinboro was chosen as the conference
favorite after receiving 12 first-place votes. Lock Haven
received the other four votes for first-place, making them the
second placed team. Shippensburg, Slippery Rock and Indiana
(Pa.) rank third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the
preseason poll.
The Golden Bears return
Cristina Reimer (Chester
Springs/Downingtown East),
and
Kristin Cupido (Bridgewater,
N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan).
Reimer placed 19th at the PSAC Championships and 32nd at the
Atlantic Regional. Cupido finished 20th at the PSAC Championship.
Ben Loht (Lewiston/Indian Valley),
Kevin Rodgers (Clifton Heights/Upper Darby)
and
Ryan Reich (Oley/Oley Valley) are key returnees for
the Golden Bear men.
Rodgers
finished with a time of 26:18 at PSAC's, and 34:02 at the NCAA
Regionals and was the MVP for the team.
Meanwhile, Loht and Reich finished with a time of 26:45 at
the PSAC Championship, with Loht placing 55th and Reich 56th.
The men's and women's teams will start the 2009 season at the
Lehigh Valley Championships on Friday, September 4th.

KU volleyball picked to finish fourth in PSAC East
KUTZTOWN, Pa.

The Kutztown University volleyball team was picked to finish
fourth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
Eastern Division preseason coaches’ poll released this
afternoon.
Kutztown is coming off of a 15-16 season in 2008, its first
losing season in seven years. However, veteran coach John Gump,
who is entering his 13th season, returns numerous key players
from last year. The Golden Bears were picked behind reigning
PSAC East champion Lock Haven, West Chester and Shippensburg.
Picked behind KU were East Stroudsburg, Millersville and Cheyney.
“It's about where I expected us to be,” Gump said. “After
struggling last year we're going to have to prove on the court
we belong back among the top teams in our division. Our players
have committed themselves to that goal and are working hard to
make that happen.”
Among some of the Golden Bears top returning players are senior
outside hitter Katie Miller (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown),
who led KU with 213 kills, junior setter Jamie Celia
(Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) and sophomore libero Lindsey
Smith (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic).
Celia, a sterling setter and server, was seventh in aces per
game (0.41) and ninth in assists per game (7.10) in the
conference. Celia enters the season with 978 career assists and
99 career service aces. Displaying her versatility, Celia had 61
kills, and 30 blocks. Meanwhile, Smith was seventh in digs per
game (3.96) in the conference. Smith competed in 107 sets and
recorded a team-high 424 digs.
Kutztown begins its 2009 season by hosting Chowan (Sept. 4),
Elizabeth City State and Philadelphia University (Sept. 5) in
the annual Kutztown Classic.

Coleman earns preseason
first-team honors
KUTZTOWN, PA.

Kutztown University junior kick returner and punter
Kendell
Coleman (Philadelphia, PA/Martin Luther King) was
selected by D2football.com magazine as a preseason all-
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division
first team specialists.
In being
selected to the all-PSAC first team last year, Coleman led the
Golden Bears with 261 punt return yards. Coleman’s average of
16.3 per return also led the PSAC. Coleman returned a punt 78
yards for a touchdown against Shippensburg. Coleman also
finished second in Kutztown history for punt return yardage in a
single season with 261. He concluded 2008 with 622 all-purpose
yards.
Overall,
Coleman has played in 19 games in two-years, rushing for 165
yards on 41 carries with one touchdown. He also had six
receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown. On special teams,
Coleman has had 16 kick returns for 325 yards, with his longest
being a 36-yard return.
Coleman and
the Golden Bears begin their 2009 season with an away contest at
Saint Anselm on Saturday August 29, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. The game
can be heard live on WEEU (830-AM).

Academic Achievement Award Winners

Fifty-two Kutztown University student-athletes were recipients
of the DII Athletics Directors Association (DII ADA) Academic
Achievement Awards presented by WeatherPORT.
The awards
were recently announced by the DII ADA. The Academic Achievement
Awards is a program that recognizes the academic accomplishments
of student-athletes at the Division II level.

institutions sent in nominees for the 2008-09 Academic
Achievement Awards, up from the 67 institutions that
participated last year. There are a total of 4,020
student-athletes being recognized this year. A year ago, 2,155
student-athletes were honored.
In order for
a student-athlete to receive an Academic Achievement Award, the
athletics director of the Division II institution MUST BE a
CURRENT dues paying member of the DII ADA.
Also, the
student-athlete must: have a cumulative grade point average of
3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, have attended a minimum of two
years (four semesters) of college level work and have been an
active member of an intercollegiate team during his/her last
academic year.
“It’s always
exciting to celebrate student-athletes success in the
classroom,” Kutztown Athletics Director Greg Bamberger said. “We
are happy and proud of our student-athletes who have made the
grade and have done a terrific job of balancing academics and
athletics.”

KU field hockey picked to finish second
in PSAC East
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The
Kutztown University field hockey team was picked to finish
second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
Eastern Division by the preseason coaches' poll.
The Golden Bears
were picked behind three-time defending national champion
Bloomsburg, who received all five first-place votes. East
Stroudsburg was picked to finish third, followed by Millersville
and C.W. Post.
In the west,
Indiana (Pa.) was selected as division favorite after receiving
four first-place votes, Shippensburg receiving the other first
place vote. Mercyhurst (third), Mansfield (fourth) and Slippery
Rock (fifth) round out the rest of the division.
The Golden
Bears, who finished 13-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play,
were ousted by IUP in the semifinals of the PSAC playoffs.
Despite losing
11 players from last year's squad, Wesner feels KU will be in
the hunt for the PSAC Championship. Key returnees include team
captains Abbey Sheeler (Fleetwood/Brandywine Heights),
Anne Waapu (Hastings, NEW ZEALAND) and Carrie Healey
(Toms River, N.J./Toms River North).
Sheeler finished the 2008 season tied for
the team lead in goals with 14, including one game winner. She
was a 2008 all-PSAC East second team selection.
Waapu, an all-PSAC East second team
selection, scored 10 goals and added three assists. Healey had five
goals last season and five assists, while starting all 19 contests.
“There were lots of changes to the
roster and we have a very young squad,” says Wesner. “But we have
great leadership from the team captains and team veterans. We also
played great in the spring. We will be very competitive and our goal
is to make the conference playoffs.”
KU will start off the season Saturday,
August 29th when they host Merrimack at 5 p.m. on University Field.
Conference play will start on Monday, September 7th when the Golden
Bears travel to Bloomsburg for a 6 p.m. contest.

Kutztown picked fourth
in PSAC East preseason coaches poll
KUTZTOWN, PA.

The Kutztown University women’s soccer team was picked to
finish fourth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
(PSAC) Eastern Division preseason women’s soccer poll
released this afternoon.
The Golden Bears finished 2008 with a 12-6-2
record and earned a spot in the PSAC playoffs. Kutztown was
picked behind Bloomsburg and West Chester, both of whom were
picked to finish first, and Shippensburg. East Stroudsburg
was picked to finish fifth followed by Millersville and
Mansfield. Of the top five teams, Kutztown was the only one
not to receive a first-place vote.
“It is nice that my colleagues feel our team
is capable of earning a playoff bid (being picked 4th), but
for me, it is where we finish the season that is most
important,” third-year coach Erik Burstein said.
Kutztown welcomes back 20 players including
his top goal scorer in sophomore
Chelsea Bressler
(Cleona/Annville-Cleona).
Bressler, who led the offense with 10 goals,
six assists and 26 points, was selected as the PSAC East
Rookie of the Year. She was also honored by Daktronics as a
second-team All-Atlantic Region selection and as a third
team NSCAA/Adidas NCAA Division II Women’s All-Atlantic
Region selection. Bressler had three multi-goal scoring
games.
Junior defender
Chelsea Deeter (Langhorne/Neshaminy)
returns to
anchor the defense. Behind Deeter, a first team all PSAC
selection, the Golden Bears posted eight shutouts. She was
named to NSCAA/Adidas NCAA Division II Women’s All-Atlantic
Region second team.
Junior midfielder
Jen
Tice (Barnegat, N.J./Southern Regional)
returns to provide leadership and experience.
Tice was named to the NSCAA/Adidas NCAA Division II Women’s
All-Atlantic Region third team. Tice, who was selected to
the PSAC East second team, posted two goals and two assists
with one game-winner.
“After the successes of last season the
expectations are higher than ever before,” third-year
Kutztown coach Erik Burstein said. “We have a tremendous
amount of talent on this squad, but like any group of
talented players, we need to find the right mix and get
everyone on the same page quickly. Although we have been
successful over the last two years, we are still building
toward bigger and better things. I am very excited about the
start of the season.”
Kutztown begins the season next Friday at

Tennis Alumni Day set for
Homecoming
KUTZTOWN, Pa.
— The
tennis Alumni Day is set for Saturday October 17th, which will
serve as Homecoming Day for Kutztown University.
Coach Suresh
Ramamurthi asks that alumni meet between 9 and 10 a.m. on
the Kutztown Courts. In the event of rain, the meeting place
will be the Field House in Keystone Hall between 9 and 10 a.m.
There will be
tennis matches played throughout the day followed by lunch.

Monica discusses the first few days of preseason practice
KUTZTOWN, Pa.

The Kutztown
University football program is hard at work preparing for the
2009 season. The sprint-laden sessions began Thursday August 6.
Fourth year coach Raymond Monica has been excited with the first
few days of camp.
“We haven’t done a lot yet,” Monica said. “I’ve seen some things
but I know we’ll know a lot more once we’ve spent a week or so
in pads. I thought the guys came in conditioned pretty well. I
guess more than anything, I am looking at a lot of younger
players. It’s taking them a little time to grasp everything that
we’re trying to do.”
Kutztown, which was picked to finish sixth in the
PSAC Eastern Division preseason poll, held its annual Media Day
Monday morning at University Field. Players gathered for team
and individual photos during the session on an extremely hot and
humid day.
The Golden Bears kickoff the 2009 season on the
road against Saint Anselm College beginning at 1:30 p.m.

KUTZTOWN, Pa. —
There is numerous Golden Bears playing professional
baseball around the world, ranging from Single-A to the
Nippon Professional Baseball league in Japan.
Ron Chiavacci is
currently pitching with the Detroit Tigers Triple-A
affiliate Toledo Mud Hens. Chiavacci has appeared in 20
games, starting in four, and has a record of 1-5 with a
5.24 ERA. In 46.1 innings of work, he has struck out 34,
walked 25 and recorded two saves.

Right-handed pitcher
Mike McCardell is currently pitching for the
Double-A New Britain Rock Cats (Minnesota Twins affiliate). McCardell, who was named the 2008 Twins minor league
Pitcher of the Year, is currently 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA.
He has started in three games, pitching 16 innings and
striking out 16.

The Golden Bears 2009
staff ace Darin Gorski has started five games and
appeared in seven for the Brooklyn Cyclones after being
drafted in seventh round of this years draft by the New
York Mets. Gorski currently holds a 1-2 record with an
ERA of 5.23. In 31 innings of work, Gorski has struck
out 26 compared to only eight walks.

Philip Rummel is
currently pitching for the Lancaster JetHawks (Houston
Astros affiliate) in the Class A Advanced California
League. Rummel has a 2-5 record, pitching in 22 games
and starting in six. In his 47 innings of work, Rummel
has struck out 29 batters compared to only 19 walks.

Ryan Vogelsong,
former fifth round pick of the 1998 draft, is currently
pitching for the Orix Buffaloes of the Nippon
Professional Baseball league. Vogelsong is now in his
third season in Japan, after pitching in Major League
Baseball for the San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh
Pirates from 2000-06.
