Alison Maurer - W. Track & Field

         Alison Maurer, of the women’s track & field team, is the final KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week for the 2004-05 school year.  Maurer earned All-America honors with a seventh-place finish in the hammer at the NCAA Division II Championships.  Her best throw was a toss of 175-11, more than a foot longer than her previous season best.

8/30  Lauren Blain, of the field hockey team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Blain led the Golden Bears to a 2-0 start to the 2004 season, with wins over St. Michael’s and Southern Connecticut State.  Blain scored a goal in the 2-1 win over St. Michael’s.  She then added a pair of goals in the Bears’ 4-2 win over Southern Connecticut State.

9/7  Yusef Turner, of the football team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Turner had a career day for the Golden Bears in their 25-14 win over Clarion.  He had 10 tackles (8 solos), three tackles for loss, two sacks, a pass breakup, blocked a punt that was returned for a TD and returned a fumble for a TD. 

9/13   Colleen Healey, of the field hockey team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Healey led KU to a 3-0 week, including a thrilling PSAC victory over Indiana (PA).  Healey was one of three Golden Bears to score goals in a penalty stroke shootout to give KU a 1-0 win over IUP.  She also scored the game-winning goal against Catawba and netted a goal against Philadelphia.

9/20 Sarah Brandon, of the women’s volleyball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Brandon led Kutztown to a 3-0 week, including PSAC East wins over West Chester and Millersville.  Brandon tallied 53 kills and a .408 hitting percentage in 11 games.  She had 16 kills against West Chester and 18 kills against Millersville.  Brandon capped the week with 19 kills against non-conference foe Concordia.

9/27  Molly Lare, of the women’s cross country team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Lare won the Division II-III race at the Paul Short Invitational on Saturday.  Her time of 22:16 on the 6K course was 18 seconds faster than her nearest competitor.

10/4  Lauren McCabe, of the field hockey team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  McCabe led the Golden Bears to a 3-0 week, including PSAC wins over Millersville and Mansfield.  McCabe scored a goal in the 5-1 win over Millersville, a goal and an assist in the 6-2 victory vs. Mansfield and two goals in a 4-0 win against Mercyhurst. 

 10/11 Kim Kelty, of the women’s soccer team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week  In a 2-0 week for the Golden Bears, Kelty had two goals and an assist.  She scored the first goal in KU’s 4-1 win over Bloomsburg, assisting on the go-ahead goal.  In Kutztown’s 2-1 win over Wheeling Jesuit, Kelty netted the game’s first goal.

10/18  Julie Folsom, of the women’s soccer team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Folsom scored a pair of goals in a 4-1 win over Millersville.  She added another goal in KU’s 3-0 win at Mansfield.

10/25  Andrea Ely, of the women’s golf team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Ely shot identical rounds of 81 to lead Kutztown to an 11th place finish at the Division I dominated Bucknell Invitational.  Ely’s cards tied KU’s record for single rounds on a par 71 course, while her two-day score of 162 is a school record.

11/1  Nicki Mitchell, of the women’s soccer team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Mitchell helped the Golden Bears clinch the PSAC East title with wins over West Chester and Millersville.  In the victory over Millersville, Mitchell had seven saves and recorded her seventh shutout of the season.  For the week, she had eight saves and allowed one goal.

11/8  Kim Kelty, of the women’s soccer team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Kelty was instrumental in KU’s run to the PSAC championship game.  Kelty assisted two goals, including the tying and winning scores, in Kutztown’s 4-3 win over Bloomsburg.  She then scored a goal in KU’s 3-2 loss to IUP in the PSAC Championship game.

11/15 Ashley Singer, of the women’s swimming team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Singer led Kutztown to a 142-120 win over PSAC foe East Stroudsburg on Saturday.  She won three individual events, including the 100 fly (59.77), 200 fly (2:13.58) and a season-best time in the 200 IM (2:16.02).  She also swam the third leg of KU’s victorious 400 medley relay, which set an ESU pool record in 4:08.90. 

 11/22  Ashley Singer, of the women’s swimming team, repeats as this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Singer won two individual events and swam on four victorious relays to lead the KU women to a first-place finish at the Golden Bear Invitational.  Singer was first in the 100 fly (1:00.50) and 200 fly (2:13.75) and was a member of the winning 200 free, 400 medley, 200 medley and 400 free relays. 

11/29 Billy Stenack, of the wrestling team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Stenack helped lead the Golden Bears to the team title at the annual Kutztown Invitational on Wednesday.  Of KU’s five individual champions, Stenack had the longest road to the title, winning four matches in the 133 pound bracket.  Stenack recorded a major decision and two decisions in the preliminaries, before notching a 13-6 win over Jerry Davis of Delaware State in the finals.   

12/6  Bret Wade, of the wrestling team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Wade battled several Division I wrestlers en route to a second-place finish in the 184 pound weight class at the Penn State Open.  Wade picked up victories over grapplers from Penn State, Duquesne, Maryland and Rutgers before losing in the finals to a wrestler from Rider.

1/3  Brooke Martin, of the women’s basketball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Martin helped Kutztown to a pair of PSAC crossover wins prior to the holiday break.  Martin scored 11 points in KU’s win over Indiana (PA) and netted 10 in the victory over Lock Haven.  Martin was the only player to score in double figures in both games as KU snapped an 11-game losing streak vs. PSAC West foes and won back-to-back games vs. the other division for the first time in three years.  She also averaged 6.5 rebounds in the two games.     

1/10    Ashley Singer, of the women’s swimming team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Singer’s week was highlighted by a school-record breaking performance in the 500-yard free in wins over Mansfield and Edinboro.  Singer’s time of 5:14.14 shattered the previous school record of 5:19.54 set by Claudine Gruver in 1997.  Singer won the event, as well as the 200 free.  She was also a member of KU’s highest-finishing team at the Bob Mowerson Sprint Classic in Florida on Tuesday, helping the 200-meter medley relay to a 3rd-place finish. 

1/18   Ryan Wasser, of the wrestling team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Wasser was 4-1 in a busy week for the Golden Bears.  Wasser, who wrestled mainly at 174 lbs., had two pins and one major in his five matches.  The highlight of the week came against West Liberty State, where Wasser pinned Tommy Clark, the #7 ranked wrestler in Division II.   

1/24  Laura Kline, of the women’s indoor track & field team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  She won two individual events and helped a relay to another win at the Susquehanna Invitational on Friday night.  Kline ran a 26.58 to win the 200-meter run, notched a 1:00.74 to take the 400 and led off the victorious 4x400 relay.  Also last week, Kline was named to the PSAC Fall Academic Top Ten as part of KU’s field hockey team.  The special education major has a 4.00 grade-point average.  

1/31   Mercedes Van Wagner, of the women’s basketball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Van Wagner averaged 20.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in Kutztown’s games last week.  She scored a career-high 26 points with 11 rebounds against West Chester, and then scored 15 with 12 boards against Mansfield.  For the week, Van Wagner shot 65.2% (15-23) from the field.

2/7     Ty Brickus, of the men’s basketball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  In a 1-1 week for the Golden Bears, Brickus scored 16 points in both contests.  In KU’s 51-50 win at then PSAC East-leading East Stroudsburg, Brickus sank 4-of-4 free throws in the final 1:48 to seal the win for KU.   

 2/14       Alison Maurer, of the women’s indoor track & field team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Maurer won the 20-lb. Weight throw with an NCAA provisional  toss of 53-3 1/4. The mark is the best in the PSAC this season. 

2/21        Steve Tyson, of the men’s indoor track & field team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Tyson won the shot put with a heave of 53-6 1/2 at the Princeton Invitational.  His mark is the best in the PSAC this season heading into next weekend’s conference championships.

2/28         Madonna Patterson, of the women’s indoor track & field team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Patterson led the Golden Bear women to its second-straight PSAC Indoor Championship, winning the 800-meter run (2:17.02), and anchoring the winning 4x800 relay (9:33.43).  She also ran the anchor leg of KU’s second-place 4x400 relay (3:59.28).  For her efforts, Patterson was named Outstanding Track Athlete of the meet. 

 3/7        Ryan Loper, of the baseball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Loper led the Golden Bears to a pair of victories in its first weekend at the Savanna Invitational in Georgia.  Loper was the winning pitcher in Kutztown’s 11-5 win over previously unbeaten Armstrong Atlantic State, pitching five innings on Saturday.  He then drove in three runs on a pair of hits in KU’s key regional victory over California (PA) Sunday. 

 3/14       Kerstin Kloeffer, of the women’s tennis team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Kleoffer led the women’s tennis team to a perfect 4-0 record over spring break.  Kloeffer was 4-0 at #1 singles and 4-0 at #1 doubles. 

3/21         Ryan Loper, of the baseball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Loper struck out 15 batters in a complete-game non-conference victory over Millersville.  He fell one out short of a no-hitter, and pitched 4.1 perfect innings.  Additionally, Loper was 4-of-9 from the plate for the week, including a two-run home run in the nightcap vs. Millersville.

3/28          Mike McCardell, of the baseball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  McCardell pitched eight strong innings in KU’s 4-1 win over Adelphi on Thursday.  He struck out nine batters, while allowing five hits and one unearned run.  He has not allowed an earned run in his last 20 innings pitched. 

 4/4       Rachel Weidensaul, of the softball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Weidensaul picked up both victories in KU’s sweep at West Chester on Wednesday.  She pitched five innings of relief in game one, allowing just three hits and no runs with three strikeouts.  In the second game, she hurled 4.2 shutout innings, also in relief, with five strikeouts and three hits allowed.

4/11           Elizabeth Lord, of the women’s outdoor track & field team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Lord won the discus with a PSAC-season best toss of 137-7 to help the Golden Bears to the team title at the PSAC East challenge on Saturday at West Chester. 

4/18           Mukundan Nandakumar, of the men’s tennis team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Nandakumar was a perfect 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles as Kutztown won two of three matches during the week.  Nandakumar led KU to PSAC victories over Bloomsburg and Millersville to wrap up an undefeated regular-season conference slate.  He also won his singles and doubles matches in KU’s hard-fought 5-4 loss to Concordia.

4/25            Harsh Sharma, of the men’s tennis team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Sharma led the Golden Bears to the PSAC Championship, KU’s fifth in the last six years.  Sharma won both his doubles and singles matches in KU’s semifinal win over Slippery Rock, and the championship match vs. Bloomsburg. 

5/2        Dave Bartolomucci, of the men’s track & field team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Bartolomucci won three events at the Lehigh Games on Saturday.  He won the 400-meter run, and ran the leadoff legs of the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

5/16    Clay Kuklick, of the baseball team, and Laura Kline and Renee Marchand of the women’s outdoor track & field team, are this week’s KU Student Bookstore Tri-Athletes of the Week. 
   Kuklick was named the PSAC Championship Tournament most valuable player, hitting .533 with six RBI as KU won the 2005 conference title. 
   Kline was a double PSAC Champion, winning the 400-meter hurdles in a stadium record time of   1:03.10, and anchoring the victorious, and PSAC title clinching 4x400 relay.
  
Marchand also won two events.  She took the PSAC heptathlon on Friday, with a score of 4,349.  She came back on Saturday to run the third leg of the PSAC Champion 4x400 relay squad to help KU win the conference team title.

5/23     Jeff Craig, of the baseball team, is this week’s KU Student Bookstore Athlete of the Week.  Craig was 4-for-13 (.308) in Kutztown’s three games at the North Atlantic Regional last week.  His sole RBI in the three games was the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth inning in the Golden Bears’ 5-4 win over Slippery Rock.  With a hit in each of KU’s three games, he ended the year with a nine-game hitting streak.
