Spalik |
SHIPPENSBURG, PA -
Dani Spalik hit her first homer of the season in the fifth, but a
five run first by Indiana (PA) gave IUP an early lead in the 6-2
final in the
opening round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
Championships.
With the loss,
Kutztown falls to the loser's bracket and will face California (PA)
on Friday at 10:00 AM in an elimination game.
In the first, the
first four Indian batters all reached on base hits, including a
two-run single. With two outs, an error at third base plated two
more runs and an IUP triple capped the inning.
KU tried to mount a
comeback in the fifth when Caitlin Hague, who was 2-fo-2 in
the contest, singled with one out. After a Sam Flowers
grounded into a fielder's choice, Spalik belted a pitch over
the left field wall to cut the lead to 5-2.
IUP added a run in
the bottom of the fifth, but Kutztown loaded the bases with two outs
in the seventh. Hague, Spalik and Willmer all
singled for KU to bring up Dani Wunderlich. Wunderlich hit a
looper that the IUP first baseman made a running, over-the-shoulder
catch on in short right field to end the threat and the game.
Rachel
Weidensaul (8-7) tossed a complete game for KU, allowing six
runs, three earned, on eight hits. She walked two and struck out a
pair of Indiana (PA) batters. Spalik was
2-for-3 with her home run and two RBI. Willmer was 2-for-4.

Bennett |
With one out in the
inning and the Golden Bears trailing, 2-1, Adriane Willmer
and Dani Wunderlich singled to put runners on first and
second. Jackie Messina followed with a base hit to right
field that scored Willmer, and an error on the Vulcans
allowed Wunderlich and Messina to move into scoring
position. Cal elected to intentionally walk Tarin Horonzy
to load the bases and Lindsay Bennett made them pay with a
game-winning single to score Wunderlich. Messina also
scored on the play when the Cal catcher dropped the throw to home
plate.
The Vulcans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a
pair of solo home runs. KU got one run back in the fourth, when
Willmer reached on a bunt single and scored on a Horonzy
sacrifice fly.

Denlinger. She tossed 5.2 scoreless innings, scattering
five hits and three walks. She struck out three.
