Game 1

THU 5/11

East Stroudsburg 3, Kutztown 1
COMPLETE STATS

SHIPPENSBURG, PA - Christine Wontroba pitched a three-hitter to lead East Stroudsburg to a 3-1 win over Kutztown in the opening game of the 2006 NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Regional at Shippensburg University.

The loss drops Kutztown (32-18) to the loser's bracket, where it will face the loser of Thursday's second game between Millersville and Shippensburg, on Friday at 10:00 AM.  ESU (27-25) will face the winner of that game.

The eight-team, double-elimination tournament continues through Monday.

ESU jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice during a rain-drenched top of the first inning.  Jennifer Veronesi walked and moved to third on a double by Ashley Miller.  Veronesi scored on a wild pitch, then Miller came home on a single by Shannon Dietrich.

At that point, the rain was too much to handle, causing a two hour, one minute rain delay.  After play resumed, ESU stretched its lead to 3-0 in the top of the third.  Jessica Schmoyer led off with a walk, and scored on a double by Eliza Morosco.

KU got on the board in the in its half of the third.  Adriane Willmer reached on an error, and scored on a single by Krista Cameron.  KU got two runners on in the fourth, but couldn't scratch across any more runs.

KU managed just three hits off Wontroba, who struck out five for the win (16-13).  Rachel Weidensaul took the loss (19-5), despite striking out six over five innings.

Game 5

FRI 5/11

Millersville 2, Kutztown 1
COMPLETE STATS

SHIPPENSBURG, PA - Kutztown University's softball team saw its season come to a close with a 2-1 loss to Millersville in game five of the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Regional at Shippensburg University.

Kutztown (32-19) is the first team knocked out of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament.  Millersville (30-20) advances to face the loser of Friday's winners' bracket game between Lock Haven and Bloomsburg.

Millersville jumped ahead when Brandi Catherman led off the second with a home run.  The Marauders manufactured a run in the third when Meghan Sinback reached on a force out, advanced to second on a grounder, then stole third and scored when KU catcher Caitlin Hague's throw to third went into left field.

KU cut the lead in half in the fourth when Krista Cameron belted her 10th homer of the season over the right field fence.  The Golden Bears threatened to tie the game in both the fifth and sixth innings, getting a runner to third in both frames.  Adriane Willmer grounded out to end the fifth, and Ashley Fitzgerald grounded into a double play to strand the runner in the sixth.  KU went down in order in the seventh.

Emily Flieger was the winning pitcher (13-4), she pitched 4.1 innings.  Jessica Vonada tossed the final 2.2 innings for the save (3).  Rachel Weidensaul took the loss (19-6), striking out four over seven innings.  She allowed just four hits.
