SHIPPENSBURG, PA - Christine Wontroba
pitched a three-hitter to lead East Stroudsburg to a 3-1 win over
Kutztown in the opening game of the 2006 NCAA Division II
Mid-Atlantic Regional at Shippensburg University.
The loss drops Kutztown (32-18) to
the loser's bracket, where it will face the loser of Thursday's
second game between Millersville and Shippensburg, on Friday at
10:00 AM. ESU (27-25) will face the winner of that game.
The eight-team, double-elimination
tournament continues through Monday.
ESU jumped out to an early lead,
scoring twice during a rain-drenched top of the first inning.
Jennifer Veronesi walked and moved to third on a double by Ashley
Miller. Veronesi scored on a wild pitch, then Miller came home
on a single by Shannon Dietrich.
At that point, the rain was too much
to handle, causing a two hour, one minute rain delay. After
play resumed, ESU stretched its lead to 3-0 in the top of the third.
Jessica Schmoyer led off with a walk, and scored on a double by
Eliza Morosco.
KU got on the board in the in its
half of the third. Adriane Willmer reached on an error,
and scored on a single by Krista Cameron. KU got two runners
on in the fourth, but couldn't scratch across any more runs.
KU managed just three hits off
Wontroba, who struck out five for the win (16-13). Rachel
Weidensaul took the loss (19-5), despite striking out six over
five innings.

Millersville 2, Kutztown 1
COMPLETE STATS
SHIPPENSBURG, PA - Kutztown
University's softball team saw its season come to a close with a 2-1
loss to Millersville in game five of the NCAA Division II
Mid-Atlantic Regional at Shippensburg University.
Kutztown (32-19) is the first team
knocked out of the eight-team, double-elimination tournament.
Millersville (30-20) advances to face the loser of Friday's winners'
bracket game between Lock Haven and Bloomsburg.
Millersville jumped ahead when Brandi
Catherman led off the second with a home run. The Marauders
manufactured a run in the third when Meghan Sinback reached on a
force out, advanced to second on a grounder, then stole third and
scored when KU catcher Caitlin Hague's throw to third went
into left field.
KU cut the lead in half in the fourth
when Krista Cameron belted her 10th homer of the season over the
right field fence. The Golden Bears threatened to tie the game
in both the fifth and sixth innings, getting a runner to third in
both frames. Adriane Willmer grounded out to end the
fifth, and Ashley Fitzgerald grounded into a double play to
strand the runner in the sixth. KU went down in order in the
seventh.
Emily Flieger was the winning pitcher
(13-4), she pitched 4.1 innings. Jessica Vonada tossed the
final 2.2 innings for the save (3). Rachel Weidensaul
took the loss (19-6), striking out four over seven innings.
She allowed just four hits.
Cameron was 2-for-3 for
Kutztown.
