LOCK HAVEN, PA – Kutztown University fell to
California University of Pennsylvania, 3-1, in a Pennsylvania State
athletic Conference (PSAC) semifinal at Lock Haven.
The Lady Vulcans won game one,
30-18, before Kutztown won game two, 30-20. In the third game, Cal
came from behind to win 31-29, and then clinched the match with a
30-24 score in game four.
Game three proved to be the turning
point for KU. The Golden Bears led for most of the game, including
a 20-15 advantage after a kill by Dani Witherite. Cal stormed back
to within 22-21, but KU maintained the lead until the Vulcans
finally tied the score at 27-27. KU edged ahead, with a game point
at 29-28, but a kill by Cal’s Joanna Nist knotted the score. Renata
deSilva followed with two aces to put the game away.
Sarah Brandon led Kutztown with 20
kills. Erin Waters had 14 kills and four blocks, while Witherite
had 13 kills and 10 digs. Nicole Biuso added 20 digs, while Austin
Kinney dished out 45 assists. Kutztown falls to 23-7 on the season,
and now awaits word on a bid to the NCAA Regionals Nov. 9-11 at a
site to be determined.
Nist had 25 kills and 12 digs for
the Lady Vulcans (28-5), who advance to face Lock Haven or Slippery
Rock in the PSAC finals.
