MILLERSVILLE, PA –
Danielle Marshall scored 24 points and Kristy Garner had 17 points
and 11 rebounds to lead Millersville to a 69-56 win over Kutztown in
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Quarterfinal action
Tuesday night.
Marshall hit 12-of-27 field goals In the game, while Garner was
5-of-13, but hit 7-og-8 free throws. Destinne-Parker Stewart added
13 points for the Marauders.
Mercedes Van Wagner scored 15 points for KU, which also got 13
points and 11 boards from Jess Brady and 11 points from Rachel
Weidensaul.
The
Golden Bears were victimized by matching a season high with 32
turnovers. KU also allowed 25 offensive rebounds, en route to being
out-rebounded 39-34.
“We
just gave up too many offensive rebounds, and we just turned the
ball over too much,” KU head coach Janet Malouf said. “We shot the
ball well and kept them below 40%, but you can’t give a good team
like Millersville that many extra opportunities to score.”
Despite
the turnovers and offensive boards, KU was able to cut a 12-point
halftime deficit to three, 44-41 on a layup by Van Wagner with 8:27
to play. The layup capped a 12-4 run. With MU back up by six,
Brady nailed a three pointer to bring the Golden Bears back within
three, 50-47 with 6:45 left.
“I give
our team credit, they fought back, but it was too much to come back
from. We played hard to get back to within three, but we just
couldn’t erase the lead,” Malouf said.
Kutztown came no closer. The Marauders scored the game’s next 10
points, including six by Marshall and four by Garner to make it
60-47 with 3:34 to play. MU made 7-of-10 free throws in the final
two minutes to preserve the win.
