KUTZTOWN WOMEN’S
SOCCER TO HOST PSAC SEMIFINAL GAME
KUTZTOWN, PA – The
Kutztown University women’s soccer team will host Bloomsburg in a
Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) semifinal contest.
The game will be played 1:00 PM at Keystone Field on Friday.
The
Golden Bears, who earned a first-round playoff bye, will face the
Huskies, 1-0 winners at West Chester in the first round on Tuesday.
Kutztown finished the regular season strong, winning the first ever
PSAC Eastern Division title (the PSAC was split into Eastern and
Western Divisions this season). The Golden Bears clinched the East
on Saturday, with a 2-0 win over Millersville. On the season, KU
posted an 8-3-1 mark in conference play for 25 points. Under the
direction of 10th year head coach Jeff Schellenberger, the
Golden Bears are 13-4-2 overall in 2004. The 13 wins are second
most in school history, one behind last year’s 14 win total.
The
2004 season started slowly for the Golden Bears, as the team started
just 2-3-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the PSAC East before catching fire
and going 11-1-1 overall and 8-1 in the PSAC East over their final
13 contests. The stretch included a KU record eight-game win
streak.
Kutztown features the PSAC’s top defense, allowing just 13 goals
(0.68/game). Erin Gallagher (jr. Vorhees, NJ/Eastern),
Nikki Marczak (sr. Levittown/Harry S. Truman) and Kate
Downing (sr. Reading/Muhlenberg) have sparked the unit that has
eight shutouts on the season. Other top defenders include
Danielle Schlupp (fr. Holland/Council Rock South), Jamie
Miller (fr. Sinking Spring/Conrad Weiser) and Mallary Kaman
(so. Lancaster/Manheim Twp.).
The
Golden Bears feature a pair of freshman goalkeepers. Nicki
Mitchell (fr. Whitehall/Whitehall) has started all but three
games this season. She is allowing just 0.68 goals against and has
made 60 saves. Lesley Freer (fr. Honesdale/Honesdale)
performed well when pressed into action, surrendering just 0.62
goals against in six games and three starts.
Offensively, the Kutztown squad is led by Julie Folsom (fr.
Wanaque, NJ/Lakeland Regional). She ranks fourth in the
conference in scoring with 22 points and goals with 10. Kelly
Murdock (so. West Lawn/Wilson) has seven assists, which ranks her
fourth in the PSAC. She also has three goals and 13 points.
Ashley Smith (so. Lancaster/Manheim Twp.) ranks second on the
team to with five goals, four assists and 14 points. Four of
Smith’s five goals have been game winners, tying her with
Folsom for the team-lead. Kim Kelty (fr. Levittown/Neshaminy)
and Missy Dailey (fr. Warminster/William Tennent) each have
four goals scored on the season.
The
Golden Bears will be making their second playoff appearance, after
making the PSAC playoffs in 2003 for the first time ever. Last
year, Kutztown finished 9-2-1 in the PSAC and lost to Lock Haven,
3-0, in the first round of the tournament. The Golden Bears also
advanced to their first NCAA Northeast Regional in 2003, losing to
Adelphi in the opening round, 4-0.
Tickets
to the game will be available at the gate. Prices are $7 for
adults, $2 for non KU students and $1 for KU students.
Friday’s other semifinal will feature Slippery Rock, the top seed in
the PSAC West, versus Indiana (PA). The semifinal winners will
square off at the winner of the Slippery Rock/IUP game on Sunday.

second half, the two teams battled without a score until 67:16.

Folsom stole it from Bloomsburg's keeper, Robin Gerber, and
punched in the game-winner. Kelty picked up her second
assist of the day on the score.
The Golden
Bears outshot Bloomsburg 13-to-8 in the win. After giving up
three goals in the first half, KU's defense clamped down to hold the
Huskies to just three shots in the second half. None of which
required a save from Mitchell - who did not have a save in the
entire game. KU's defensive effort was led by Danielle
Schlupp, Jamie Miller and Kate Downing.
Gerber made a
pair of saves for the Huskies.
