Summary of Open Meeting on the
ATTITUDES FOR SUCCESS GOAL
February 19, 2004

1. Welcome

  • On behalf of the committee, Dr. Lynch welcomed approximately 16 faculty members to the meeting.

2. Review of Mission

  • Dr. Lynch read the Mission Statement and the floor was opened to any comments regarding the Mission Statement. No comments were offered. 3. Discussion of Goal 5 - Attitudes for Success
  • Dialogue from faculty:
    • Reference to social responsibility should be added to goal.
    • Suggested using a different word in place of "encouraged."
    • Remove "will be able" from each goal.
    • Suggested inserting "among them" to the list so that the list doesn’t seem inclusive.
    • The following alternate wording of the goal was offered:
      • Students will strengthen qualities and attitudes necessary for a successful and productive personal and public life.
    • Replace "full and successful life" with "fully engaged and successful life."
    • Add health to the list.
    • Suggested adding "intellectual" before "curiosity" in list.
    • Where is ruthlessness mentioned in goal?
    • How were examples selected? A student may think these are the only attitudes required for success.
    • Replace "passion" with "commitment" or "energy."
    • Reference to attitude belongs in each goal.
    • Suggested including something about citizenship.
    • Replace "passion" with "perseverance."
    • Relative to "attitudes acknowledged to be necessary" – acknowledged by who? Suggestion to remove "acknowledged to be" from the goal.
    • Suggested omitting the list (everything after the colon).
    • Possibly add "reflection" to the list.
    • Suggested replacing "full" with "involved."

4. Comments Relative to Implementation of Goal

  • Dialogue from faculty:
    • Concern expressed that this goal cannot be assessed, and if it can’t be assessed, it shouldn’t be included as a goal.
    • Alumni and employers might be able to measure this goal.
    • It may be hard to quantify but this goal can be measured.
    • Success means something different to different people and can actually mean survival for some students.
    • Possibly change the name of the goal so something other than "attitudes for success."

5. Closing

  • Dr. Lynch thanked the faculty for their comments relative to the Attitudes for Success goal. She indicated that the team will now review the faculty feedback from all the goal meetings and will make revisions to the goals based on the feedback.
