Summary of Open Meeting on the
COMMUNICATION GOAL
November 13, 2003

Team Members Present: Debra Lynch, Janice Chernekoff, Kevin McCloskey, Gary Brey, Randy Schaeffer, Paul Sable, Robert Flatley, Kim Johnston, Rolf Mayrhofer, Brian Wlazelek, Linda Goldberg

1. Welcome

  • On behalf of the committee, Dr. Lynch welcomed approximately 19 faculty members. The floor was opened to any comments regarding the Mission Statement drafted during the spring 2003 college meetings. No comments were offered.

2. Discussion of Communication Goal

  • Dialogue from faculty:
    • Clarify numeracy communication skill.
    • People will be mathematical literate.
    • Numeracy is more an analytical skill, trying to relate how this a communication skill.
    • Numbers and graphs is a way of communicating with people. Looking for a better word.
      Numeracy is language.
    • Students need a statistics course. Never seen numeracy tied in with communication., need a better word.
    • Want concept/different word.
    • Concerned with this goal, communication major—expected outcomes includes communication, # 1 skill employers look for.
    • Team looking at communication as lay people.
    • Concerned if we have a localized definition of communication. Has web resources to share.
    • Replace numeracy with numerical and graphical expressions.
    • Expressive vs. receptive language – Leading is receptive.
    • Different modalities – want people to be able to speak and listen in a language. Speaking, listening, reading and writing.
    • Effective technology communication is very important.
    • Don’t see technology as being required.
    • Can’t imagine not have technology communication skills.
    • Infinitely expandable goal.
    • Students will be able to communicate effectively through demonstration of printed, oral, aural, visual, and technological literacy’s.
    • What about math?
    • Would include kinesthetics (instead of performance).
    • How we perform in every day life; kinesthetics is part of performance.
    • Argue the opposite.
    • Please define kinesthetics.
    • Describes any type of movement, the study of movement.
    • Kinesthetics; subpart of performance.
    • Argue the opposite.
    • Avoid words like "numeracy" and "kinesthetics."
    • Make working easy to understand.
    • Performance used in an entirely different way when using technology.

3. Thought/Ideas on Implementation of Goal

  • Dialogue from Faculty:
    • No specifics included; where’s history, science, etc. going to go?
    • Goal specific for now. Wrote very broad so multiple courses will fit.
    • Need to develop a comprehensive approach, needs some fundamental introduction. Then its reinforced during their academic career (reinforced throughout the curriculum).
    • Excellent thought – we teach in isolation.
    • Can this be done outside of traditional depts.?
    • The number one fear is speaking in public, speech should be taught by professionals.

4. Closing

  • Dr. Lynch thanked the faculty for their comments on Communication. The next goal to be discussed will be Human Diversity.

5. Other

  • Below are the scheduled meetings for the faculty to share their thoughts with the committee. All meetings will be held in SUB 183 at 11:00.
    • Thursday, November 20 – Human Diversity Goal
    • The Ethical Issues & Responsibilities Goal and the Attitudes for Success Goal will be scheduled in the spring 2004 semester.
