March 7, 2003

Absent: Gary Brey, Paul Sable

1. Committee Members

Dr. Lynch welcomed everyone to the meeting and committee members introduced themselves.

The following handouts were distributed to committee members:

  • KU General Education Rationale and General Education Goals
  • Board of Governors policy regarding Academic Degrees
  • Board of Governors policy regarding General Education
  • Chapter 354 Requirements - College of Education
  • Middle States General Education policy
  • Example of a General Education grid sheet for the College of Visual and Performing Arts
  • Strong Foundations, a publication regarding principles for effective general education programs

2. Web site

  • Matt McKernan will be implementing a list serve in the near future for access by members of the General Education Committee.
  • There will also be a web page which will be updated by Randy Schaeffer.
  • The address for the web page is www.kutztown.edu/committees/cger.

3. KU Mission

  • It was noted that the KU Mission contained in The Bulletin is different than what is written in the handout distributed to committee members. It was clarified that the mission statement contained in the handout is the most current version.

4. General Education Goals

  • Committee members discussed the need for a "common core." Dr. Goldberg referred to the Strong Foundations publication and Dr. Lynch asked committee members to review the book prior to our next meeting.

5. Other

  • Dr. Goldberg discussed with committee members various possible ways to handle the general education process.
  • Discussed scheduling college meetings to be held at the end of April relative to mission and goals for General Education.
  • Discussed the feasibility of having a General Education expert come to campus. There was also discussion about the possibility of having a consultant to assist the committee.

6. General Education Committee Meetings

  • It was decided that the General Education Committee will meet every Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. The location of the meeting will be announced via email as soon as an available room is found. There was discussion as to whether the General Education committee meetings should be open meetings or closed meetings. Kevin McCloskey moved, Randy Schaeffer seconded, that the General Education committee meetings will be closed meetings. The motion passed.

7. Approval of Minutes

  • Randy Schaeffer moved, Brian Wlazelek seconded, to approve the Minutes of the February 27, 2003 meeting.
  • Professor Schaeffer noted that "will do" should be changed to "can do" in the second bulleted item under Section 4 of the Minutes.
  • Professor Schaeffer indicated that he doesn't remember the committee deciding to ask SGB to elect a student to serve on the committee as indicated in the Minutes. It was unanimously agreed to strike the last sentence of the tenth bulleted item under Section 4 of the Minutes relative to student representation.
  • The Minutes were approved as amended.

8. Student Representation on the General Education Committee

  • Kimberly Johnston moved, Randy Schaeffer seconded, to add a student selected by the Student Government Board to the composition of the General Education Committee. The motion passed.
  • Dr. Goldberg indicated that she would contact SGB relative to naming a representative to the committee.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. Committee members will be notified via email of the meeting location.
