Minutes
April 16, 2003

Present: Janice Chernekoff, Robert Flatley, Linda Goldberg, Kimberly Johnston, Debra Lynch, Rolf Mayrhofer, Kevin McCloskey, William Mowder, Paul Sable, Randy Schaeffer, Brian Wlazelek.

Absent: Gary Brey

1. College Meetings

  • The revised schedule of college meetings was distributed. Dr. Lynch noted that the first college meeting will be held next Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. with the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She encouraged committee members to attend as many of the college meetings as possible.
  • Dr. Lynch indicated that only the mission statement will be presented at the college meetings and that the mission statement should be the primary focus of the meeting.
  • Committee members discussed various other issues that may arise at the college meetings.

2. Approval of Minutes of April 2, 2003 and April 9, 2003

  • Kevin McCloskey moved, Randy Schaeffer seconded, to approve the Minutes of the April 2 and April 9, 2003 meetings. The motion passed.

3. Summer Meeting Days/Times

  • The committee decided to meet every Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. during the first summer session. The meeting location will be announced at a later date.

4. Mission Statement

  • The final draft of the mission statement was reviewed with a few minor changes being made to the document.
  • Paul Sable moved, Rolf Mayrhofer seconded, to approve the Mission Statement for General Education at Kutztown University. The motion passed.
  • Dr. Lynch indicated that the final version of the document will be sent to all committee members today via email.

5. Goals

  • The committee's general consensus is that the goals should be short.
  • Dr. Lynch distributed drafts of goals submitted by various committee members and indicated that the committee will begin writing the goals at its next meeting.

6. Other

  • There was a suggestion to add to the Web site the Middle States response relative to general education. The committee agreed that it should be included and Randy Schaeffer indicated that it will be added in the near future.
  • Materials were distributed relative to the Asheville Institute on General Education scheduled for May 31 - June 4 at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Linda Goldberg indicated that funding is available for a team of five members from the committee to attend the conference.

The next meeting of the General Education Restructuring Team will be held on Wednesday, April 23 at 10:30 a.m. in Room 312 of the Student Union Building.
