Minutes
April 9, 2003

Present: Janice Chernekoff, Linda Goldberg, Kimberly Johnston, Debra Lynch, Rolf Mayrhofer, Kevin McCloskey, William Mowder, Paul Sable, Randy Schaeffer.

Absent: Gary Brey, Robert Flatley, Brian Wlazelek.

1. Welcome

  • Dr. Lynch welcomed everyone to the meeting.
  • Due to the lateness in sending out the minutes from the previous meeting, Dr. Lynch indicated that the minutes from both the April 2 meeting and today's meeting will be approved at our next meeting.
  • A brochure outlining the general education program (University Studies) at Portland State University was distributed. Discussion followed.
  • Randy Schaeffer referred to the Grand Valley State University general education program which is available for viewing on the web. He will forward to committee members the link for viewing the page.

2. College Meetings

  • The schedule of college meetings was distributed. It was noted that a meeting announcement was forwarded to each dean's secretary who in turn forwarded the announcement to the respective departments.
  • The committee discussed various issues that may arise at the college meetings.

3. Mission Statement

  • The committee discussed the pros and cons of including a "who we are" sentence in the mission statement. It was decided not to include it in the mission statement.
  • A final draft of the mission statement was completed and will be sent to committee members prior to next week's meeting.

4. Goals

  • The committee began discussing goals. It was decided to use the outline prepared for writing the mission statement as the starting point in writing the goals. The outline will be forwarded to committee members via email.
  • Dr. Lynch asked committee members to begin writing goals for each category based on the outline prepared for the mission statement.

5. Dismissal

  • Dr. Lynch announced that next week's meeting will be held in Room 322 of the Student Union Building.

The next meeting of the General Education Restructuring Committee will be held on Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. in Room 322 of the Student Union Building.
