The purpose of the meeting was to discuss administrative support relative to the implementation of a new model and a revised timeline for completion of the general education restructuring process. Dr. Cevallos thanked the members of the General Education Restructuring Team for the work done so far.

  • Dr. Lynch asked about available resources for the implementation of a new general education model, especially relating to the hiring of a coordinator to aid in the implementation of a new model and possible incentives for the development of new courses. Dr. Cevallos responded that resources will be made available for such purposes.
  • Dr. Lynch informed Dr. Cevallos that a new model will not be ready for a vote in the Fall semester, but rather the Spring 2004 semester.
  • Dr. Cevallos indicated that he plans to make reference to the general education restructuring process at his "State of the University" address. It was suggested that a letter also be sent to the university community after the "State of the University" address.
  • There was discussion about the possibility of bringing in both a consultant with experience in general education reform from a similar college to work with the committee and an expert on general education reform to address the campus community.
  • It was noted that a model needs to be developed that is best for all our students based on employer survey responses, etc. and that the committee needs to sell the goals and concept before going on to credit hours. It was further noted that implementation of a new model will take several years.
  • The coordinator will work with the General Education subcommittee of the University Curriculum Committee. Dr. Johnston noted that this deviates from the UCC by-laws.
  • It was decided that the committee will have a half-day retreat on Tuesday, August 19 beginning at 12:00 p.m.
