Minutes
September 3, 2003

Present: Janice Chernekoff, Robert Flatley, Linda Goldberg, Kimberly Johnston, Debra Lynch, Rolf Mayrhofer, Kevin McCloskey, William Mowder, Randy Schaeffer, Brian Wlazelek.

Absent: Gary Brey, Paul Sable.

1. Approval of Minutes

  • R. Mayrhofer moved, R. Schaeffer seconded, to approve the Minutes of August 19, 2003. The motion passed.
  • K. McCloskey moved, B. Wlazelek seconded, to approve the Minutes of July 18, 2003. The motion passed.
  • K. McCloskey moved, D. Lynch seconded, to approve the Minutes of August 6, 2003. The motion passed with the addition of "but rather the Spring 2004 Semester" to the end of the seconded bulleted item.

2. Speaker

  • Dr. Goldberg reported that Jerry Gaff is available to visit KU on either October 1-3 or October 6-8. The committee decided to ask him to visit the campus October 6-8.
  • The following tentative timeline was established for the consultant’s visit:
    • Tuesday, October 7, 8:00-9:30 a.m. - meet with committee;
    • Tuesday, October 7, 9:30-11:00 a.m. - open session with faculty;
    • Tuesday, October 7, 3:00-4:30 p.m. - open session with faculty;
    • Wednesday, October 8, 9:00 a.m. - meet with committee.
  • Academic departments will be asked to send at least one representative to one of the open sessions with faculty.

3. Discussion of Goals

  • Committee members began a final review of the goals. It was decided to keep the Critical Thinking and Communication goals as written.
  • Dr. Lynch asked committee members to review the remaining goals for next week’s meeting.

4. Other

  • Dr. Lynch indicated that the letter to faculty relative to the revised timeline and revised mission statement will be sent out today.
  • Dr. Lynch indicated that an article relative to general education will be sent out to committee members as soon as it is photocopied.

The next meeting of the General Education Restructuring Team will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2003, at 12:00 p.m. in Room 324 of the SUB.
