About Allies

The Purpose of Allies Is To:

Provide a safe, social, support network and to advocate for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning, heterosexual, and all allies who are students, staff, alumni, or faculty of Kutztown University.
Educate members, students, staff, and faculty of Kutztown University and the community about discrimination and oppression of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and heterosexual individuals.
Increase awareness and accepteance of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and heterosexual persons and issues to create and ensure cooperation and unity among the Kutztown University community.

What is an Ally?

An ally is a person who supports equal civil rights for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning individuals. Many allies are heterosexual, supporting equal rights because of GLBTQ friends or having an open mind.

Straight allies are sometimes harassed just as much as their GLBTQ friends, because of their association with the equal rights cause. Their importance to the community is great, because they make the community more visibly accepted. Celebrities and even their families have stood up with GLBTQ individuals against anti-gay legislation.

What is GLBTQ?

Gay A term used in some cultural settings to represent males who are attracted to males in a romantic, erotic, and/or emotional sense. Not all people who engage in "homosexual behavior" identify as gay, and as such this label should be used with caution. It is also used to refer to the GLBTQ community as a whole, or as an individual identity label for anyone who does not identify as heterosexual.
Lesbian Term used to describe female-identified people attracted romantically, erotically, and/or emotionally to other female-identified people.
Bisexual A person emotionally, physically, and/or sexually attracted to males/men and females/women. This attraction does not need to be equally split between genders and there may be a preference for one gender over others.
Transgender A person who identifies as a member of a gender other than that is expected based on anatomical sex. Sexual orientation varies, and is not at all dependent on gender identity.
Questioning A term used to describe people who are questioning their sexual orientation.
