Zack and Fowler
join Kutztown swimming staff
KUTZTOWN, PA
(October 6, 2009) –
Kutztown University women’s swimming coach Tim Flannery has added
Cindy Zack and Stephen Fowler to his coaching staff.
Zack is
returning to Kutztown to serve as assistant swim coach. Zack spent
four years (2002-06) as the Kutztown assistant swimming coach before
moving on to Rutgers University to serve in the same capacity. Among
some of Zack’s responsibilities will be working with athletes on
stroke technique and training, recruiting, and working with athletes
to set and obtain goals.
Meanwhile, Fowler will be responsible
for on deck coaching and assisting with the dryland training
program. Fowler was a volunteer to the Kutztown swimming program
during the 2005-06 season. In addition to that brief stint, he
brings a wealth of additional coaching experience to the Kutztown
University swim team.
During her first
stint at Kutztown, she worked primarily with the stroke and IM
groups. At Rutgers, Zack worked with the freestyle and backstroke
groups and served as women's recruiting coordinator. She coached
five women who swam at the NCAA Division I National Championships.
Prior to KU, Zack spent three years as Assistant Swim Coach at
Montclair State University while obtaining her Masters degree in
Physical Education/ Coaching and Sports Administration. Zack also
graduated from Montclair State University with a Bachelors degree in
Mathematics and Computer Science. A four-year member of the varsity
swim team, and captain her senior year, Zack was an All-Conference (NJAC)
selection in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, winning the
Metropolitan Conference title in the 200 butterfly her sophomore
year. She was also named the New Jersey Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW) Woman of the Year in
2000. She received the William Dioguardi Award for her contributions
to Montclair State and the sport of swimming.
Fowler’s coaching experience includes
five years with the Red Hawk Swim Club, two years each with the
Westfield YMCA and Elizabethtown Aquatic Club, and a total of seven
summers coaching competitive swim teams in New Jersey and
Pennsylvania. He also spent the 2002-03 season as the dive coach at
Montclair State University and the following two summers as the dive
coach for Minisink Swim Club, coaching that program to its first
ever league championship. In 2003, Fowler was selected to represent
New Jersey Swimming as a member of the 2003 USA Swimming Eastern
Zone Championship coaching staff.
Collegiately, Fowler swam for
Elizabethtown College from 1990-94, during which time he accumulated
seven team records and served as team captain for his final three
seasons with the program. His senior year, Fowler earned three
individual and two relay titles at the Middle Atlantic Conference
championship meet, including a conference record and provisional
national championship qualifying time in the 100-yard backstroke.
During his collegiate career, Fowler was honored as the
Elizabethtown College Winter Scholar Athlete and was the recipient
of the Dr. Clair R. McCullough Award in recognition of being the
most improved student-athlete over a four-year career.
Fowler graduated with honors and
received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics Education and
Computer Science from Elizabethtown College in 1994. He obtained
his Master of Science degree in Mathematics and Computer Science
from Montclair State University in 2001. Fowler has been a Kutztown
faculty member since 2004 and is currently pursuing his Ph.D.
