Kutztown finishes second at the F&M Invitational
LANCASTER, PA. (December 6, 2009) –
The Kutztown University women’s swimming team finished second
overall and senior Steph Jeppesen (Bethlehem/Liberty) earned
another NCAA automatic qualifying time on the final day of the
Franklin & Marshall College Invitational Sunday.
(FINAL
RESULTS)
Kutztown finished with 606.5 points. The College of
New Jersey won the Invitational with 653.5 points. Rounding out the
top five was Washington, Md. College (354 points), Gettysburg (325)
and Franklin & Marshall (315).
In setting another meet record in as many days in the
200-yard breaststroke, Jeppesen achieved an automatic qualifying
time for the NCAA Division II championship meet to be held at Canton
(Oh) in March. Jeppesen swam to victory in the 200-yard breaststroke
in 2 minutes, 20.94 seconds.
Jeppesen already punched her ticket to the NCAA
championships in the 100-yard breaststroke Saturday by reaching the
automatic standard in that event. She also provisionally qualified
in the 200-yard individual medley.
“It’s a relief to know that she has earned an
automatic qualifying standards,” Kutztown swim coach Tim Flannery
said. “She had a good weekend and the good thing is she won her race
today by nine seconds, which means she can swim faster if she is
pushed.”
Jeppesen also teamed with junior Allison Sheely
(Enola/Trinity), sophomore Nikki Hinsdale (Glen Mills/Bayard
Rustin) and sophomore Jordan Shapiro (Yardville,
NJ/Princeton) to finish second in the 400-yard relay (3:37.61).
Sheely was ninth in the 100-yard freestyle (55.94)
and sophomore Stephanie Kearns (West Chester/East) tied for
10th (56.10).
In the 200-yard butterfly, freshman Lauren
Galetto (Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart) was sixth (2:17.23),
sophomore Helena Hewitt (West Chester/East) was 13th
(2:23.39) and freshman Krista Schlupp (Quakertown/Quakertown)
was 14th (2:24.94). In the 200-yard backstroke, Shapiro
was fourth (2:12.34) and Hinsdale was sixth (2:14.25). Junior
Katie Kelly (Downingtown/Downingtown) placed 15th in
the 200-yard butterfly.
“We had good swims all weekend,” Flannery said. “I am
happy this year with coming in second to a good team than running
away with the event. This meet challenged our women and they
responded well with some good times.”
Kutztown will take a break and then head to Florida
for its annual training. The Golden Bears will hit the pool again on
January 7 when they compete in the Bob Mowerson Sprint Meet starting
at 3 p.m.
