LABITSCH WINS ITA A-SINGLES TOURNAMENT, QUALIFIES FOR NATIONALS

Labitsch, who also won the A-Doubles tournament with teammate Sharma, will compete at nationals in both the singles and doubles tournament.

Nick Gallagher (sr. King of Prussia/Upper Merion) lost in the B-Singles finals Monday, falling to Wesleyan's Doug Hornak 6-1, 6-1. Gallagher, along with teammate Arijit Goswami (fr. Kolkata, INDIA), lost in the B-Doubles finals 8-2.

Sunday, Oct. 5

LABITSCH/SHARMA ADVANCE TO NATIONALS, MORE FINALS MONDAY

The duo defeated Nuhfer/Perez of Bloomsburg, 8-3, in the semifinals, then punched their ticket to nationals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Ochoa/Hornak (W.Va. Wesleyan). 

Labitsch will look to advance to nationals in singles as well, advancing to the finals of the A-Singles bracket as well. He defeated Mijo Crotic (Mercyhurst) and Tim Hansson (Mercyhurst) in straight sets to advance to Monday's final.

In the B-Flight singles, Nick Gallagher (sr. King of Prussia/Upper Merion) advanced to Monday's finals vs. Wesleyan's Hornak.  Arijit Goswami (fr. Kolkata, INDIA)  lost in the semifinals.

In B-Doubles, Goswami and Gallagher will play in Monday's finals vs. a team from West Virginia Wesleyan.

Saturday, Oct. 4

KU ADVANCES THREE DOUBLES TEAMS, FOUR INDIVIDUALS TO COMPETE SUNDAY

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. — Lukas Labitsch (sr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA) and Arpit Sharma (jr. Kolkata, INDIA) both advanced to the quarterfinals individually in the A-Singles bracket and as teammates in the A-Doubles bracket at the ITA Atlantic Regionals at Bloomsburg University Saturday.

Labitsch and Sharma are one of three doubles teams and two of four singles players to advance to Sunday’s competition for the Kutztown University men’s tennis team.

The ITA Regionals will finish up on Monday with the singles finals.

No. 1-seeded Labitsch, who had a first-round bye, defeated West Virginia-Wesleyan’s Danilo Francison 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 in the second round of the A-Singles bracket.

Sharma, who also had a first-round bye, won by default in the second round over Virginia State University’s Javan Gardinier.

Andrew Torrealba (jr. Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan) won 6-3, 6-1 over East Stroudsburg’s Will Norris in the first round, but fell 6-3, 6-3 to West Virginia-Wesleyan’s Rafeal Cavalcante in the second round.

In the B-Singles bracket, No. 1-seeded Arijit Goswami (fr. Kolkata, INDIA) had a bye in the first round and defeated Mercyhurst’s Adam Marnik 8-6 in the second round.

KU’s Nick Gallagher strung together two wins to advance to the quarterfinals, as well, winning 8-2 over East Stroudsburg’s Rob Mikolon in the first round and 8-2 over Bloomsburg’s Alex Hall in the second.

Ryan Baxter, of East Stroudsburg, defeated Bobby Zerwick (so. Bowers/Kutztown) 8-6 in the first round.

In the A-Doubles bracket, Labitsch and Sharma teamed up to win 8-6 over West Virginia-Wesleyan’s Daniel Lobo and Danilo Francison. They move to the quarterfinals where they will face Bloomsburg’s Jeff Nuhfer and Fernando Perez on Sunday.

The teams of Goswani and Gallagher and Zerwick and Torrealba each advanced to Sunday’s quarterfinals with wins Saturday in the B-Doubles bracket.

Goswani and Gallagher defeated Virginia State University’s James and Richardson 8-4. Zerwick and Torrealba won 8-4 over Bloomsburg’s Alex Hall and Jason Nolt.
