First Round
East Stroudsburg at Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. —
The Kutztown University women’s tennis team will host East
Stroudsburg in the opening round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference tournament at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
The Golden Bears (10-4, 4-1 PSAC East) finished second in the PSAC
East, behind Bloomsburg. The winner of Tuesday’s first round match
will travel to Bloomsburg for the PSAC Championships Friday and
Saturday.
Slippery Rock will host Mercyhurst in the other first-round matchup
with the winner advancing to Bloomsburg. California (Pa.) earned the
bye into the PSAC Championships by winning the PSAC West title.
KU, which is ranked No. 5 in the Atlantic Region, is 64-36 in
singles matches, with
Rohini Das (jr. Calcutta, INDIA)
leading the way. She is 16-5 overall,
including an 8-2 record in her last 10 matches. She is 8-3 at No. 1
singles.
Sabrina Arnaud (jr. Pintendre, CANADA)
is 13-4 overall and 12-2 at No. 3
singles. She has won nine of her last 10 matches.
At No. 2 singles,
Barbara Joerns (jr. Ludwigshafen, GERMANY)
is 8-3. She is 12-6 overall.
Nicole Devine (so. Allentown/Allentown Central Catholic)
has been solid at No. 4 singles,
going 11-2. She is 11-3 overall on the season.
Das and Joerns are
9-6 as a doubles pair, and Arnaud and Devine are 9-5.
The Golden Bears
are 1-0 against East Stroudsburg this season, winning 7-2 on April
5.

BLOOMSBURG,
Pa. —
The Kutztown University men’s tennis
team will travel to Bloomsburg for the Pennsylvania State Athletic
Conference Championships Friday and Saturday.
The Golden Bears (11-4, 5-0 PSAC East)
finished as the top team in the conference during the regular season
and will look to win their eighth PSAC title in 10 years.
Last season, KU finished as the
runner-up to Bloomsburg. Under the direction of head coach
Suresh Ramamurthi, KU won
three straight titles from 2000 to 2002 and four straight from 2004
to 2007.
KU is ranked third in
the Atlantic Region in the latest NCAA poll, and has since defeated
the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the region. The Golden Bears are coming
off of a 9-0 win against No. 1-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan.
Four players have more than 10 wins in
singles competition this season.
Lukas Labitsch (sr. Bruck an der Mur, AUSTRIA)
is 14-6, competing at both
No. 2 and 3 singles. He has won seven straight singles matches and
nine of his last 10.
Santiago Baquerizo (sr.
Guayaquil, ECUADOR)
is 10-3 overall and 9-3 at No. 1 singles. He has won six straight
singles matches.
Arpit Sharma (jr. Kolkata, INDIA)
is 11-3 and
Andrew Torrealba (jr. Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan)
is 15-6.
Arijit Goswami (fr. Kolkata, INDIA)
is 9-2 and
Jonathan Goulet (jr. Quebec, CANADA)
is 9-4.
Altogether, KU is 80-35 in singles matches, and 25-3 in the PSAC.
In
doubles, KU is 44-16 overall and 14-1 in the conference.
Labitsch
and Sharma are KU’s top combo, going 14-2. They have won eight
straight matches.
Goulet and Baquerizo are 7-1 as a
team.
