SHIPPENSBURG, PA. (Oct. 11, 2009) - Kaushik Das (Guwahati, INDIA) won the doubles championship Sunday morning and followed it up with a win in the singles in the afternoon at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Championship at Shippensburg.

Das and Arpit Sharma (Kolkata, INDIA) proved their No. 1 seeding to be true as they won the doubles 8-5 over Millersville's Drew Slocum and Drew Sorgi. This marks the second-straight year that Sharma was crowned the doubles champion, he teamed with Lukas Labitsch to win in 2008.

In singles, Das defeated Kyle King of Mercyhurst 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the finals where he will meet teammate Jonathan Goulet (Quebec, CANADA).

"The match was a very solid, hard fought battle," said coach Suresh Ramamurthi. "Jonathan really dug down deep and played high percentage tennis. He was very focused and came back from a few deficits. He came up big and just wanted to make the championship."

In the championship, Das defeated Goulet by a score of 6-4, 6-2 to claim the title.

"Kaushik really stepped it up this weekend," said Ramamurthi. "He had a tough quarterfinal but he battled through it. I was impressed with his attitude and focus."

Goulet dropped No. 1 seed Eric Dove of Bloomsburg in a match that each participant refused to lose. Goulet, with a 7-6 win in each set, won the tiebreaker 7-5 in the first set before winning the final set 12-10.

Goulet will take on a Golden Bear for the second time in the individual tournament. He knocked off Andy Torrealba (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan) in the second round.

The men and women tennis teams have wrapped up the fall portion of their schedule with the women's team splitting their dual matches. The teams will start up in March with the spring season.

Das shines at PSAC Individual Championships

SHIPPENSBURG, PA. (Oct. 10, 2009) - Kaushik Das (Guwahati, INDIA) has his eye set the top spot in the men's singles and doubles of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Championship at Shippensburg.

In singles, Das handled East Stroudsburg's Jared Rosenberg with ease in a 6-1, 6-2 win. He followed that up with a match against Mijo Cotic of Mercyhurst that pushed each player to the limit.

After dropping the first set 7-5, Das bounced back with a 6-4 win to force a super-tiebreaker. The tiebreaker kept to the theme of tight scores with a 10-7 advantage in Das' favor to advance to the semifinals on Sunday.

Das will be joined in the semifinal round by teammate Jonathan Goulet (Quebec, CANADA). Goulet downed Drew Slocum of Millersville by a 6-3, 6-2 score. He then was met in the second round by fellow Golden Bear Andy Torrealba (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charles W. Flanagan).
