KU INDOOR
TRACK & FIELD HEADED TO PSAC CHAMPIONSHIPS
KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University indoor track and field squads will head
to East Stroudsburg for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
Indoor Championships on Saturday and Sunday.
The Golden Bears, under second-year head coach Ray Hoffman,
will be in search of the fourth title in the last five years for the
women, while the men’s squad is looking to improve upon its
seventh-place finish from a year ago.
Both of
KU's teams are ranked nationally entering the meet. In the
latest US Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association power
rankings, KU's women are ranked 18th, behind Slippery Rock (15th)
and Shippensburg (16th); while the the Golden Bear men are 15th,
behind Shippensburg (8th).
The women have a number of athletes capable of bringing home
individual PSAC crowns. Doofan Tor-Agbidye (jr. Stewartsville,
NJ/Phillipsburg) has the fourth fastest time in the 55 meter
dash (7.43) and fifth fastest time in the 400-meter dash (58.81), an
event she placed third in last year’s championships. She will also
enter as the eighth ranked runner in the 200.
Joanna
Horstmann (jr. Downingtown/Downingtown West) is also
ranked fifth in the mile (5:12.85) and is the eighth seed in the
800. Her best time this season is 2:19.52.
Stephanie Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside {Ellwood City})
is poised to make an impact in the distance events. She is the top
seed in the 5,000 with a conference best 17:46.49 and fifth in the
3,000 with a school-record time of 10:18.66. Last season, Williams
placed second in the 5K and was fourth in the 3K at the PSAC
Championships.
Kristin Cupido (fr.
Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan)
is seeded fifth in
the 3K (10:31.84) and the 5K (18:28.21). Keri Brown (fr.
Southampton, N.J./Seneca) has the sixth fastest time in the mile
(5:13.58).
Kelly
Strickland
(fr.
Bear, Del./Caravel Academy)
is
ranked third in the
pole vault. Strickland’s best height this season is 10-10. A
year ago at the championships, she placed second. Alison Wise
(so. Denver/Garden Spot) is ranked seventh with a mark of 10-4.
Michelle
Hughes (jr.
Warminster/William Tennent) has the second best throw in the weight throw 50-0 3/4. Ashley
Pinter (fr. Bethlehem/Liberty) is ranked eighth in the weight
throw (45-7 3/4), while Katie Colburn (fr. Hanover/South Western)
is seeded eighth in the pentathlon (2,801 points)
KU will
enter the championships with three contenders in the long jump, with
Alexandra Butler (jr. Montoursville/Montoursville), Kayla
Greaves (fr. Exton/Downingtown East) Laura Deller (sr.
York/Dallastown) seeded third through fifth. Butler comes in
with a season best jump of 17-4, with Greaves (17-3 1/2) and Deller
(17-2 1/4) close behind.
KU’s distance medley relay
is ranked fourth (12:24.19), the 4x800 is ranked fifth (9:57.44) and
the 4x400 relay is currently seeded sixth (4:02.52).
On the men’s side, KU’s top contenders come in the field events,
with throwers Jim Dart (sr. Havertown/Haverford) and Steve
Tyson (sr. Bridgeport/Upper Merion) leading the way. Dart has
the PSAC’s top shot put of the season with a school-record mark of
55-1. Tyson is ranked second at 53-10 1/2, and is the three-time
defending PSAC champion in the event.
Dart
is also seeded third in the 35-pound weight throw with a distance of
55-6 1/2. Chris Boutsikaris (so. Andover, NJ/Newtown) is
seventh (50-1 3/4) and Jason Rebuck (so. Southampton/William
Tennent) is eighth (49-3).
Ian Clark (jr.
Troy, NH/Monadnock Regional) is
ranked second in the pentathlon (3,196 points), finishing third last
year.
Cody Hartzler (jr.
Belleville/Indian Valley)
is currently ranked third in high jump
(6-6). He placed second at last year’s championships.
Justin Germani (fr. Birdsboro/Daniel Boone)
is ranked
fourth in the pole vault with a distance of 15-3. Mike Kramer (fr.
Pine Grove/Pine Grove) and Devin Peterson (fr.
Kutztown/Kutztown) are ranked eighth in the long jump (21-11).
On the
Track, KU’s top event is likely to be the 55 hurdles, where three
athletes are seeded in the top eight. Vonkurt Redley (sr.
Philadelphia/Cheltenham) has the PSAC’s fifth best time at 7.78
this season. Shane Harvey (fr. Potterburg, N.J./North Hunterdon)
is seventh (7.89) and Justin Gibbs (sr. Pottstown/Pottstown)
is eighth (7.90).
The men’s
relays are all seeded in the top seven, with the distance medley
relay fourth (10:33.34), the 4x400 relay sixth (3:21.80) and the
4x800 relay seventh (8:24.18).
Events will begin at 2
p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday at East Stroudsburg’s Koehler
Fieldhouse.
Tickets are $7 for adults
and $2 for seniors and students. Students from PSAC schools will be
admitted for free with a student ID.

Third, Men Fourth After Day 1 of PSACs
EAST STROUDSBURG,
Pa. - Kutztown University's women's and men's indoor track & field
teams are third and fourth, respectively, after the first day of
competition at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
Championships at East Stroudsburg University.
KU's women have 35
points through six events. KU is 11 points behind leader Lock
Haven and one behind second place Millersville. KU's men are
fourth with 34.5 points through seven events. KU is 21 points
behind first-place Shippensburg. Slippery Rock is second with
50.5 and East Stroudsburg is third with with 42.
Individually, KU
had several placewinners. For the men, Mike Kramer was
second in the long jump (22-7 3/4), while Devin Peterson was
seventh (21-10 3/4). Ian Clark was third in the
pentathlon (3,350 points), while Isaac Schatz was eighth
(3,150).
In the pole vault,
Justin Germani was fourth (14-11). Jim Dart placed
fifth in the 35-pound weight throw (54-3 3/4), Steve Tyson
was sixth (52-9 1/4) and Jason Rebuck was eighth (51-5
1/2).
KU's distance
medley relay team of Ben Loht, Joe Tavormina, Tom
Mooney and John Pyne was sixth in 10:39.93. The
4x800 relay of Tom Mooney, Loht, Matt Reightler and Billy Boorse was
seventh in 7:59.99.
For KU's women,
Michelle Hughes turned in the top effort, placing second in the
20-pound weight throw (51-11 3/4). Ashley Pinter was
seventh (48-11 1/2). KU's 4x800 relay of Keri Brown,
Jessica Donovan, Jolene Collins and Joanna Horstmann
was also second in 9:28.90.
Kristin Cupido
was third in the 5,000 (18:21.25) and Christina Reimer was
sixth (18:27.44). Alex Butler was fourth in the long
jump (17-1 1/2) and Katie Colburn was eighth in the
pentathlon (2,814 points).
The women's
distance medley relay placed eighth in a time of 13:29.22. The
team consisted of
Jolene Collins, Lynn Lisofsky, Kristin Green and Becky Webb.
HARTZLER, TYSON WIN PSAC TITLES SUNDAY AT CONFERENCE MEET
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.
— Cody Hartzler (jr. Belleville/Indian Valley) and
Steve Tyson (sr. Bridgeport/Upper
Merion)
collected first-place finishes for the Kutztown University men’s
indoor track and field Sunday in the final day of the Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference Championships at East Stroudsburg
University.
KU finished fifth
overall at the meet with 82.5 points. Slippery Rock won with 116.5
points, while Shippensburg was second with 113. East Stroudsburg was
close behind with 100 points and California (Pa.) was fourth with
93.5 points.
Hartzler finished
first in the men’s high jump with a leap of 6-10 1/4, breaking
KU's school record. The previous record was 6-9, set by Shaun
Landis in 2002.
Tyson edged out
teammate Jim Dart (sr. Havertown/Havertown) for the top spot
in the shot put with a throw of 54-10 3/4. Dart, who owns the school
record in the shot put, finished second with a throw of 54-0. Both
were NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
KU placed four athletes in the top eight of the 55 hurdles, with
Vonkurt Redley (sr.
Philadelphia/Cheltenham)
leading the way with his fifth-place finish (7.72).
Shane Harvey (fr. Potterburg,
N.J./North Hunterdon)
was sixth (7.84), Justin Gibbs
(sr. Pottstown/Pottstown)
was seventh (7.97) and T.J.
Longmore (so. Manheim Twp./Manheim Twp.)
was eighth (7.99).
Billy Boorse
(sr. Collegeville/Perkiomen Valley)
was fourth in the 800 (1:56.54).
Redley, Steve Hixson (sr.
Coopersburg/Southern Lehigh),
Boorse and Kendel Dixon (so.
Atglen/Octorara)
led the 1,600 relay team to a fourth-place finish (3:22.17).
STRICKLAND HELPS KU FINISH FOURTH OVERALL AT PSAC CHAMPIONSHIP
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa.
— Kelly Strickland (so. Bear,
Del./Caravel Academy)
led the Kutztown University women’s indoor track and field team to a
fourth-place finish at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
Championship Sunday at East Stroudsburg University.
The Golden Bears
finished with 66 points, behind Slippery Rock and Shippensburg, who
shared the title with 110 points each. Lock Haven was third with 92
points.
Strickland’s jump of 11-5 3/4 was good enough for second place in
the pole vault. Alison Wise
(so. Denver/Garden Spot)
also placed for KU in the pole vault with her jump of 10-0. She
finished eighth.
Samirah
Barczynski (so. Mohnton/Governor Mifflin) finished
fifth in the 55-meter dash (7.50).
Doofan Tor-Agbidye
(jr. Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg)
took third in the 400 (58.66).
Keri Brown (fr.
Southampton, N.J./Seneca)
finished fifth in the mile run (5:10.61).
Kristin Cupido (fr. Bridgewater,
