KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University
women’s cross country team ran away with first place and the men
took second at the Maroon and Gold Fall Classic Saturday.
The
KU women, who scored 22 points, swept the top three positions in
the 6K race and had seven runners finish in the top 12. Stephanie
Williams (sr. Harrisburg/Riverside) led the way, taking first
with at time of 24:04.81. KU’s Joanna Horstmann (jr.
Downingtown/Downingtown West) and Kristin Cupido (fr.
Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Reg.) finished second and
third, while the Golden Bears’ Hailey Dell (jr. Saranac
Lake, N.Y./Saranac Lake) finished seventh and Keri
Brown (fr. Southampton, N.J./Seneca) took ninth.
The Lock Haven men held off KU in team points,
26-48, to take first, with six runners finishing in the top 10. West
Chester’s Tommy Pearson took first in the 8K race with a time of
27:30.37. Lock Haven swept the next three positions with Brandon
Pomerantz, A.J. Johnson and Shawn Moore.
KU’s John Pyne (jr. Harrisburg/Bishop
McDevitt), Pat Bone (sr. Doylestown/Central Bucks West)
and Ben Loht (so. Lewistown/Indian Valley) followed,
finishing fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. Lock Haven sealed
the deal by sweeping the next three places. Fueled by Pearson’s
first place, West Chester finished third overall with 68 points, and
the University of the Sciences (102) and Albright College (147)
rounded out the five competing schools.
Matt Cocciardi (fr. York/York Suburban)
and Tim Ballingall (fr. Downingtown/Downingtown East) rounded
out KU’s top five runners. Cocciardi finished 14th and Ballingall
came in 16th.
In the women’s race, Lock Haven finished
second with 59 points and West Chester followed with 75. Albright
College narrowly took fourth with 111 beating out University of the
Sciences by one point.
