Jump to Second in Atlantic Region, 17th Nationally

meets, Cupido has finished in the Top Five

KUTZTOWN, PA. (October
21, 2009) –
The Kutztown women's
cross-country team moved from third to second place in the Atlantic
Region and jumped from 19th to 17th nationally for Division II according to the latest rankings released on Tuesday by the
U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The Golden Bears were ranked third for the
last two consecutive weeks in the Atlantic Region. Previously, they
held the No. 7 spot. Nationally, this is the third straight week the
Golden Bears have made the Top 25 seed.
Kutztown, picked to finish
fourth overall
in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) by the preseason
coaches’ poll previews,
switched places with Slippery Rock in the Atlantic Region for week
6. Shippensburg remains at the top of the rankings.
Nationally,
Kutztown slipped past Ferris State (No. 18) and Hillsdale (No. 19)
to place within the top 15. PSAC East rival Shippensburg is ranked
6th. The only other PSAC school to appear within the top 25 is
Slippery Rock, (No. 21). Chico State, located in Santa Rosa,
CA is again ranked first.
Kutztown had strong performances in
their last two meets. Last week, at the Lafayette Leopard
Invitational in Easton, PA, the Golden Bears finished second
overall. Kutztown placed five runners within the top 15.
At the
Paul Short
Invitational at Lehigh University on Oct. 2 Kutztown won first
place in the Brown Race, placing four of its seven runners in the
top 30. The Golden Bears broke their own team record and set new
individual time records as well.
Junior
Kristin Cupido (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan)
has performed in four of the five races this season. She finished
three of her four in the top five overall. At last weekend's
meet, she placed third with a time of 24 minutes 55 seconds. At the
Paul Short Invitational, she
finished fifth with a time of 21:38 She now holds
the KU school record for fastest time on the course. At the season
opener at Lehigh Valley Championships, she placed third with an
overall time of 22:48.
Kutztown returns to action this weekend, when it competes in their
final meet of the regular season at East Stroudsburg
University’s Nevins Invitational on Oct. 24.
The
U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA)
is the non-profit professional organization that represents men's
and women's cross country and track & field coaches in the United
States. The organization represents over 8,000 coaching members,
including 91% of NCAA coaches. USTFCCCA serves as an advocate for
cross country and track & field coaches, providing a leadership
structure to assist the needs of a diverse membership, serving as a
lobbyist for coaches' interests, and working as a liaison between
the various stakeholders in the sports of cross country and track &
field.
