Women place fifth place in Atlantic Region,
19th nationally
KUTZTOWN, PA. (November 4, 2009) – The Kutztown
women’s cross-country team is ranked fifth in the Atlantic
Region, and 19th
nationally, according to the latest polls released on Tuesday
November, 3, by the United States Track and Field Cross Country
Coach’s Association, (USTFCCC).
Within the Atlantic Region, the
USTFCCCA ranks the top 10 performing squads. Of the top 10 schools,
the top five are Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)
schools.
Ranked first is
Shippensburg
University, who has maintained this spot since the start of the
season. Following Shippensburg for second place is Bloomsburg, who
traded positions with Kutztown this week. Slippery Rock and Lock
Haven maintained third and fourth place, respectively.
Following behind the Golden Bears are Millersville (No. 6), Clarion
(No. 7), West Virginia Wesylan (No. 8), Edinboro (No. 9) and
Mansfield (No. 10).
The Golden Bears
held second place in the Atlantic Region for the last two
consecutive weeks and stayed in the top five since week 4, (October
6). Kutztown was slated to finish sixth overall in the USTFCCCA
preseason poll and fourth in the PSAC.
Kutztown slipped
three spots from their second place standing after their performance
at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships
held on Edinboro University’s campus. The women placed fifth
overall.
Junior
Kristin Cupido (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan)
led the KU women, finishing in 21st place with a time of 23:50.3.
Maureen Watson
(Walnutport/Allentown Central Catholic)
and freshman
Becca Brandt
(Cleona/Cedar Crest) were next for the Golden Bears,
placing 25th and 26th, respectively. Watson crossed the finish line
at 24:05.0 and Brandt shadowed her at 24:06.4.
Keri Brown
(Southampton/Seneca)
and
Cheryl Dingman
(Lansdale/North Penn) rounded out the top five for
the Golden Bears. Brown (31st place) had a time of 24:17.6 and
Dingman (44th place) clocked in at 24.33.6.
The women will return to action this weekend, Saturday Nov. 7 when
they perform in the NCAA Atlantic Regionals held on Mansfield
University’s campus.
