KUTZTOWN, PA. (October
28, 2009) – According to the latest rankings released
Tuesday, the Kutztown University women's cross-country team
maintained second place in the Atlantic Region, and slid into 16th
place nationally. The rankings are
determined by the
U.S. Track and Field and
Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Kutztown was picked to finish
fourth overall
in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) by the preseason
coaches’ poll previews.
Within the Atlantic Region, the USTFCCCA
ranks the top 10 performing squads. Of the top 10 schools, the top
five are PSAC schools. Taking first place is Shippensburg
University, who has maintained this spot since the start of the
season. Following Kutztown is Slippery Rock in third place Lock
Haven in fourth place and rounding out the top five is Bloomsburg.
Millersville (No. 6), East Stroudsburg
(No. 7), West Virginia Wesleyan (No. 8), Mansfield (No. 9) and
Edinboro (No. 10) make up the rest of the top 10 teams.
Nationally, the Golden Bears moved up
one spot, into the 16th spot. Leading nationally is Grand Valley
State, who moved into first place, knocking Chico State into second.
PSAC East rival Shippensburg lost two spots this weekend, moving
from sixth to eighth. Kutztown, previously ranked 17th nationally,
slid past Dallas Baptist for the 16th spot. The only other PSAC
school ranked nationally is Slippery Rock, sitting in 21st.
The Golden Bears had a successful
performance at the Nevins Invitational at East Stroudsburg on
Saturday Oct. 24, in which the team placed second overall and
finished four runners in the top 20, helping them in the rankings.
Resting the majority of its front line for
the Nevins Invitational, freshman
Lindsay Smith (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright)
pulled-through for the team, with a 10th place finish overall. She
finished first for the squad.
Following closely
behind Smith for 11th and 12th place was
Lauren Ayars (Ocean Twp. N.J./Ocean Twp.) (20:50) and
Lindsey Ray (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) (20:57). Wrapping up
the top 20 was
Chelsea Ray (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat), who finished
in 19th with a time of 21:38.
Jessica Frederick (Whitehall/Whitehall) placed 35th, with a
time of 22:23. The Golden Bears earned 76 points, trailing East
Stroudsburg by five points. A total of 90 runners from 14 teams made
up the field of competition.
Kutztown returns to action this weekend, Saturday Oct. 31, when it competes
at the PSAC Championships, held on the Edinboro University campus.
The
U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA)
is the non-profit professional organization that represents men's
and women's cross country and track & field coaches in the United
States. The organization represents over 8,000 coaching members,
including 91% of NCAA coaches. USTFCCCA serves as an advocate for
cross country and track & field coaches, providing a leadership
structure to assist the needs of a diverse membership, serving as a
lobbyist for coaches' interests, and working as a liaison between
the various stakeholders in the sports of cross country and track &
field.
