KUTZTOWN, PA. (October 28, 2009) – According to the latest rankings released Tuesday, the Kutztown University women's cross-country team maintained second place in the Atlantic Region, and slid into 16th place nationally. The rankings are determined by the  U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Kutztown was picked to finish fourth overall in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) by the preseason coaches’ poll previews.

Within the Atlantic Region, the USTFCCCA ranks the top 10 performing squads. Of the top 10 schools, the top five are PSAC schools. Taking first place is Shippensburg University, who has maintained this spot since the start of the season. Following Kutztown is Slippery Rock in third place Lock Haven in fourth place and rounding out the top five is Bloomsburg.

Millersville (No. 6), East Stroudsburg (No. 7), West Virginia Wesleyan  (No. 8), Mansfield (No. 9) and Edinboro (No. 10) make up the rest of the top 10 teams.

Nationally, the Golden Bears moved up one spot, into the 16th spot. Leading nationally is Grand Valley  State, who moved into first place, knocking Chico State into second. PSAC East rival Shippensburg lost two spots this weekend, moving from sixth to eighth. Kutztown, previously ranked 17th nationally, slid past Dallas Baptist for the 16th spot. The only other PSAC school ranked nationally is Slippery Rock, sitting in 21st.

The Golden Bears had a successful performance at the Nevins Invitational at East Stroudsburg on Saturday Oct. 24, in which the team placed second overall and finished four runners in the top 20, helping them in the rankings.

Resting the majority of its front line for the Nevins Invitational, freshman Lindsay Smith (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) pulled-through for the team, with a 10th place finish overall. She finished first for the squad.

Following closely behind Smith for 11th and 12th place was Lauren Ayars (Ocean Twp. N.J./Ocean Twp.) (20:50) and Lindsey Ray (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat) (20:57). Wrapping up the top 20 was Chelsea Ray (Barnegat, N.J./Barnegat), who finished in 19th with a time of 21:38. Jessica Frederick (Whitehall/Whitehall) placed 35th, with a time of 22:23. The Golden Bears earned 76 points, trailing East Stroudsburg by five points. A total of 90 runners from 14 teams made up the field of competition.
