Three top 10 finishes lift Kutztown women to third
BETHLEHEM,
PA. (September 4, 2009) – The Kutztown University cross-country team
began its 2009 season in style by finishing third in the Lehigh
Valley Collegiate Championship meet at Lehigh University Friday
afternoon. Overall, the Golden Bears had three runners place in the
top 10.
Junior
Kristin Cupido and senior Maureen Watson finished third and
fourth, respectively for the Golden Bears. Cupido completed the 6K
course in 22 minutes, 48.7 seconds. Watson finished in 22:52.6.
Also, placing in the top 10 for KU was freshman Becca Brandt, who
completed the course in 23:26.7. Kutztown generated 62 points to
finish behind Lehigh (35 points) and Lafayette (56).
Finishing
behind Kutztown was Muhlenberg (113), Moravian (133), DeSales (151)
and Cedar Crest (195).
“I am very
pleased with our effort for only running five girls,” Kutztown coach
Ray Hoffman said. “This was much more than I could ever ask for from
these young women. They did an outstanding job.”
Lindsey
Smith finished 23rd (25:06.8) and Jill Kostishion was 24th
(25:12.6). For the Golden Bears, Hoffman believes this could be the
beginning of something special for his young team. Watson’s fourth
place effort is an extension of the terrific preseason camp that she
has enjoyed according to Hoffman.
“I am
pretty excited about our effort,” Hoffman said. “I believe this sets
us up nice for the future.”
Fans can
get an up close and personal glimpse of the women’s cross-country
team when it hosts the Maroon-and-Gold meet next Saturday morning at
