sweeps doubleheader in KU's season opener

WILSON, N.C. —
The Kutztown University baseball team opened up its season
dropping two games in a doubleheader against Barton College in
Wilson, N.C., Saturday.

Barton (2-4),
playing in its fifth and sixth games of the season, won 10-7 in
the first game and 11-8 in the second.
Chad Lightcap (jr.
Boyertown/Boyertown) and Mike Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue
Mountain) highlighted KU’s offense, each going 4-for-9 in the
doubleheader.
Lightcap had three
homers, six RBIs and three runs scored, while Kacelowicz also had a
homer, two RBIs and three runs scored.
The Golden Bears
(0-2) will play another doubleheader against Barton College at noon
Sunday.
GAME 1: Barton 10, Kutztown

Barton College’s
Aaron Watkins, Michael Parker and Allen Corbett went a combined
8-for-11 in the fifth, sixth and seventh spot in the batting order
to down KU 10-7 Saturday in the first game of their doubleheader.
All three scored
two runs each, and fueled by Ryan McCleney’s 3-for-4 showing with
two RBIs, Barton College tagged KU starter Philip Rummel (sr.
Exeter/West-Mont Christian) for nine runs on nine hits in 3.0
innings.
The Golden Bears
took a 3-1 lead in the top half of the second inning on RBI hits
from Kacelowicz and Mark Renda (r-fr. Lansdale/North Penn),
and a sacrifice fly by Garrison Rausch (sr. Allentown/Parkland).
Barton College
bounced back with four runs in both the bottom half of the second
and the third to take a commanding 9-4 lead.
Kacelowicz homered
in the fourth to cut it to 9-5, and Lightcap’s homer in the sixth,
added with an RBI single from Jeff Kistle (fr. Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny),
narrowed the gap to 10-7, but Barton pitchers Nick Nigito and John
Anderson, who collected the save, shut down the Golden Bears from
there.
GAME 2: Barton
College 11, Kutztown 8
Barton College
scored in every inning en route to an 11-8 win over KU in the final
game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
A five-run second
inning helped fuel Barton College’s win, putting the Golden Bears in
a 6-0 hole before Lightcap hit a solo homer to lead off the third.
Jared Frey (fr. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley), who went
2-for-3, had an RBI double in the inning, as well, to cut the lead
to 6-2, but another two runs by Barton College in the bottom half
made it 8-2.
Barton College
added single tallies in the next three innings to close out the win.
Lightcap hit a
three-run homer in the top of the sixth as KU scored four runs in
the inning to cut the lead to 10-8, but Anderson shut out KU again
in the top of the seventh for his second save of the day.
Darin Gorski (fr.
Mount Joy/Donegal) started for KU, going 4.0 innings, while
allowing nine runs — five earned — on 11 hits. He
struck out five batters.
Barton College
starter Chris Hill pitched five innings, allowed one earned run on
four hits and struck out six.
