Kulbacki's grand slam lifts KU baseball over Lock Haven 10-2

HAMPTON, Va. — Lock Haven scored the first two runs in the top of the second, but the Kutztown University baseball team scored the next 10 runs to win 10-2 in the opening day of the 2008 Builder Invitational at War Memorial Field in Hampton, Va., Thursday.

KU (1-4) held Lock Haven (0-1) to just three hits in the non-conference win. The Golden Bears managed 10 runs on six hits — the biggest one coming from Matt Kulbacki (so. Hershey/Hershey).

Leading 3-2, Kulbacki blew the game open with his grand slam in the sixth inning, giving the Golden Bears a 7-2 lead.

Mike Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) also had a good day at the plate, going 1-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, two walks and two runs scored.

The Golden Bears’ first win of the season was accredited to starting pitcher Philip Rummel (sr. Exeter/West-Mont Christian), who allowed two runs on three hits in six innings of work. Rummel struck out seven batters, while walking four.

KU struck out a total of 12 Lock Haven batters as Justin Jachowicz (sr. Summit Hill/Panther Valley), Ryan Cassidy (so. Langhorne/Archbishop Wood) and Trent Mertz (fr. Kutztown/Kutztown) each pitched scoreless and hitless innings to close out the contest.

Cassidy and Mertz each struck out two batters, while Jachowicz had one punch out.

Lock Haven had just one baserunner in the final three innings.

Chad Lightcap (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) and Corey Buletza (fr. St. Clair/Pottsville) each had a single and a run scored for the Golden Bears, while Mark Renda (r-fr. Lansdale/North Penn) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Michael Dugan (r-fr. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City), Jeff Kistle (r-fr. Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny) and Nole Saylor (fr. Boyertown/Boyertown), who had a single, all scored a run for KU.

Update: With Friday's game postponed due to rain, KU will return to the diamond at noon Saturday to meet the host of the 2008 Builder Invitational, Apprentice School, which defeated Bloomsburg 6-5 Thursday.
