Pitching powers KU to doubleheader sweep of Mansfield Sunday

April 6, 2008

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — The Kutztown University baseball team swept Mansfield in a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East games Sunday at North Campus Field.

KU (14-14, 4-4 PSAC East) was led by solid pitching, holding Mansfield (21-10, 5-3 PSAC East) to a combined seven hits in the two games. The Golden Bears won 3-1 in the first game and 5-2 in the second.

The Golden Bears will travel to Lincoln University for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Monday. The game was originally scheduled for last Friday at home, but rain pushed the game to Monday on the road.

LIGHTCAP'S THREE-RUN BLAST LIFTS KU TO 3-1 WIN

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Darin Gorski (so. Mount Joy/Donegal) had his perfect game spoiled in the top of the seventh, but Chad Lightcap (jr. Boyertown/Boyertown) made sure Gorski got the win with his three-run homer in the Golden Bears’ 3-1 win Sunday.

With two outs and two runners on in the bottom of the sixth inning, Lightcap blasted a home run over the center field wall for the 3-0 lead.

At that point, Gorski had faced the minimum on the mound, but a single by Ryan Giblin with one out in the seventh broke up the perfect game. Chris Miller singled Giblin in to cut the lead to 3-1, but Gorski struck out Jared Johnson and got Nate Grove to ground out with the bases loaded to end the game.

Gorski (5-2) finished with five strikeouts. He allowed one run on three hits and a walk.

Mansfield pitcher Justin Garcia threw a strong game, as well, holding the Golden Bears to just four hits. Lightcap finished with two of those hits, going 2-for-3 with a double and a homer.

All three runs for KU were unearned as Mark Renda (r-fr. Lansdale/North Penn) reached on an error to give the Golden Bears two runners on with no outs. Garcia recorded the next two outs, but couldn’t retire Lightcap.

Corey Buletza (fr. St. Clair/Pottsville), who singled and scored on Lightcap’s homer, finished 1-for-2.

REIS PITCHES KU TO 5-2 WIN OVER MANSFIELD

KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Mike Kacelowicz (so. Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) scored two runs for the Golden Bears as KU completed its doubleheader sweep of Mansfield with a 5-2 win Sunday at North Campus Field.

Derick Reis

Kacelowicz led off the game with a single and scored on Lightcap’s RBI single. Lightcap later scored when Buletza hit into a fielder’s choice to give the Golden Bears a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Kacelowicz, who went 2-for-3 with a walk, scored again in the fourth inning after he reached on a two-out single. He moved to second on a wild pitch and then scored on a single from Jared Frey (so. Mohrsville/Schuylkill Valley).

KU added another two runs in the sixth inning, as Buletza, who singled to lead off the inning, scored on a throwing error. On that same error, Garrison Rausch (sr. Allentown/Parkland) moved from first to third, setting up a sacrifice fly by Jeff Kistle (r-fr. Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny).

Derick Reis (sr. Jim Thorpe/Jim Thorpe) started on the mound for the Golden Bears, pitching 5.1 innings, while striking out four. He allowed one run on three hits and one walk.

Justin Jachowicz (sr. Summit Hill/Panther Valley) and Mike Bucklin (so. Shillington/Governor Mifflin) pitched in relief of Reis. Jachowicz finished up the sixth inning for Reis, collecting back-to-back outs, and Bucklin came in the top of the seventh, surrendering one run on one hit and a walk.

Lightcap and Buletza each finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Mansfield’s Chris Miller scored two runs, both off of RBIs by Nate Grove.
