Kutztown splits pair at Savannah Tuesday

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Kutztown University baseball team split a pair of games at the Savannah Invitational Tuesday.

The Golden Bears (5-8) opened the day with a 16-7 win over Fairmont State before falling 5-2 to Armstrong Atlantic.

KU will return to the field for a non-conference contest against California (Pa.) on Thursday. It will be the first of two straight games against the Vulcans as the two teams will meet against at 10 a.m. on Friday. KU will close out the invitational at 2 p.m. Friday with another matchup against Fairmont State.


KU COLLECTS 21 HITS IN 16-7 WIN OVER FAIRMONT STATE

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Corey Buletza (fr. St. Clair/Pottsville), Brett Wigder (fr. Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull)  and Michael Dugan (r-fr. Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) led the Golden Bears with a combined nine RBIs in a 16-7 win over Fairmont State Tuesday at the Savannah Invitational.

Widger led the pack with four RBIs, while going 3-for-4 at the plate. Buletza went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs, while Dugan was 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs and a solo home run.

Garrison Rausch (sr. Allentown/Parkland) also had a good showing at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Steve Craig (jr. Wilkes-Barre/Bishop Hoban) took advantage of the offense provided and held Fairmont State (5-8) to seven runs on 11 hits. He struck out nine over 6.2 innings of work.

KU managed 21 hits in the game, including a string of five straight singles in the seventh during a five-run rally, giving the Golden Bears a commanding 14-4 lead.


ARMSTRONG ATLANTIC HANDS KU 5-2 LOSS

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The Golden Bears were forced to go to their bullpen early and Armstrong Atlantic State University took advantage and won 5-2 Tuesday at the Savannah Invitational.

After Dugan, who went 3-for-3, had hit game-tying RBI double in the top of the fourth, knotting the score at 1-1, but Armstrong Atlantic (13-5) scored a combined four runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to build a 5-1 lead.

Matt Kulbacki (so. Hershey/Hershey) cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the eighth with an RBI single, but with the bases loaded in the ninth, KU couldn’t manage the clutch hit it needed to tie the game.

Mark Renda (r-fr. Lansdale/North Penn) went 2-for-5 with a run scored for the Golden Bears.
